Only eat things that you like very much, and only when you are actually hungry.

Don't eat to avoid waste, to relieve boredom, or just because food is there.

Avoid products made of white flour and white sugar. That immediately eliminates a lot of bad stuff. Notice I said avoid. I find I have to eliminate these things entirely but you may be able to get away with limiting them to special occasions or a certain amount per week.

Up your intake of veggies esp. green leafies. You don't have to love eating leaves of grass
but they're so nutritious, every sensible plan emphasizes them. They're very low in calories, nutrient-dense, water-rich, and loaded with compounds that enhance health and longevity.

Pay attention to portion sizes. One large fruit can be the equivalent of two fruit servings. At over 100 calories a pop, it's not a catastrophe if you eat a large pear, but it all adds up. If the choice is the monster pear or the Danish, take the pear. If the choice is the Daddy apple or the Little Sister apple, take the sister.

Eat slowly. It takes at least 20 minutes for the message "I've eaten enough" to reach the brain; till then you just keep eating. So eat slowly enough that your brain catches on before you're stuffed.

Don't eat till you feel full; eat till you no longer feel hungry. You should feel that you still have room in your stomach.

Don't drink your calories. Drink water or seltzer.

What I try to do:

1- Eat sitting down.
2- Don't eat out of a package, ie put potato chips in a bowl.
3- Take a portion and go back for more if I still want it.
4- Before eating things, think about why I am eating it, ie am I hungry, if I am not then what am I?
5-Nothing is off limits. If I think about it and decide that I want it because I am hungry, or curious about the taste etc. then I sit down and have it.
6- If I feel like I want to eat but I am not hungry, I try and figure out what need I am trying to fulfill

I found the best thing on sale Romain that was ready to eat. I was noshing on it like chips. It reminded me that I also like shredded cabbage.

Having baby carrots or anything healthy that you enjoy eating ready to go instead of something else is very helpful. Or try making having a nice cup of tea as a treat instead of something else

For myself I don’t eat after supper. It’s not a hard and fast rule but works most nights.

I try to avoid junk food that I don’t enjoy because what’s the point? So I don’t have potato chips but will occasionally have ice cream.

I don’t snack. I’d rather go longer between meals and eat real food. It could be snack but I mean I try to avoid junky snacks.

Breakfast
Lunch
Healthy Snack
Dinner

No unhealthy snacking out of boredom.

Today looked like this

Breakfast - 2 slices toasts, 2 eggs and fresh veggies
Lunch- toast, lox and veggies
Snack- Greek yogurt with homemade granola bar
Dinner- grilled chicken salad

I find that if I eat full meals I don’t need snacking.
I also had 3 coffees, no sugar.

I am trying to eat healthier and lose weight. I don't want to go on a diet specifically but I would like to make some rules or guidelines for myself. I notice my eating habits are really all over the place. I'm sure if I was more intentional, I would be more successful.
Can you share what guidelines you follow in your health (weightloss) journey?

ETA: I'm not asking for advice about what you think I should do. I'm asking what you do. I want to cull ideas to create my own guidelines.

Add significant protein and some sort of veggie to every meal (even if you start small).

My friend has plenty of experience in the nutrition world and she suggested a great way to lose 5 lbs quickly:

Before every meal and every snack, drink 2 cups of water

It sounds so basic, but apparently, it's very effective. If you think it through logically, it's not so hard to imagine why

For a while I was using the app wise mind and I liked it.
You take a picture of your food and you journal some notes about your meal.
I’m not doing it but I really like the idea.
