My son is 7. We have been practicing handwriting for the past 2 years and he is still struggling terribly. He cant remember how to form the letters even though we’ve practiced them hundreds of times. His class is writing simple sentences and he’s struggling to write his name on top of the paper. He has practiced writing his name every single day for the last two years. What is going on? How can we fix this mental blockage? And yes he’s had OT and I saw no improvement

Dyslexia or dysgraphia. I’d get him evaluated by a neurosphych or someone who specializes in learning disabilities. You need more than a standard BOE evaluation.

I agree with dysgraphia but vision issues are often a root cause. You need a developmental or educational vision exam with a vision therapy trained optometrist.

Have you had him evaluated by a eye dr as well as for visual spacial?

Yikes. I never thought of these reasons. I will start with an eye doctor. I hope it’s not dysgraphia

Make sure of the above, not just any random eye Dr.

DH was diagnosed with dysgraphia as a kid. His handwriting isn't gorgeous (though he takes offense if you say that, because he thinks it's nice and it's easy to read). But it really doesn't impact our lives in any way.

DS has dyslexia and struggles tremendously with handwriting. He works on it in OT with a book called handwriting without tears. He’s come far but he has a very long way to go still.
We are looking into other methods as well treating the dyslexia which we hope will help too

Anyone know an optometrist like this in or near monsey?

Another thing about him, and I wonder if it’s related, is that he can’t tell the difference between his right and left shoe. He keeps putting his shoes on the wrong feet and when I tell him to look down and tell me if it looks funny he says no

Almost definitely related. How many ots have you tried, and did you hire them or were they assigned by an agency?

Is he athletic? Playing an organized sport can be an excellent way to improve visual spatial skills as well.
How's his reading/kriah?

Definitely a neuropsych evaluation. It sounds like it could be dysgraphia. Could also be difficulty in visual motor integration. I have issues with both, I just type and thay has solved my problems, if you can get an iep, he can get something to type witb for school, it is life changing.
The right-left mix up isn't uncommon in kids with dyslexia. How is his reading?
I agree on getting vision checked too, but definitely go the neuropsych eval route too.

How are his fine motor skills?
Can he color in the lines, do a lace card, hang from monkey bars, cut with scissors o the line?
