my 20-month-old son has been waking up regularly, ready to go at 5:00 am regardless what time he went to bed. I live in Isreal, and it is still dark outside at 5:00 these days. Is there anything I can do to change this??

If you want it to stop happening your best bet would be to let your child cry it out for a few minutes or longer until they eventually fall back asleep, and their bodies learn the new time schedule for wake up. I did this with two toddlers there is seriously no other way.

What time is he going to bed at night? How long and what time is his nap?

I had it. It’s excruciatingly hard to get up with them. Sometimes letting the cry doesn’t work, they’re just ready to start their day then. And then they’re ready for a nap by 8am!!! I’ve found it only lasts a few weeks (4-6),and if one parent gets up at 5 and then gets back into bed around 6:30 if possible until 7:30 it’s possible to survive.

There's a study that shows that kids who wake up early need more stimulation during the day.
Try to have them use a lot of energy during the day, and tire them out towards supper time. Let them run around for a while (and even be hyper if it's safe...)
When their days are full of stimulation, they won't need to wake up early.
