My general feeling on the topic is that people have more kids than they can afford to pay tuition for and as long as that happens there's always going to be friction between parents and schools. I for one don't understand how parents feel they have the right to have as many kids as they want without considering the 80k it will cost to send them to frum private school every year. If that is your "plan" then you should also plan on fundraising the difference. Scholarships should be for those who face unexpected hardships. |
If you want to start an interesting conversation. I live OOT and I see a lot of my peers stopping after 5/6 kids but my peers with much bigger families are almost all moros and rebbeim who get a nice tuition break as part of their employee benefits. I always wonder how the school can absorb it.

My husband teaches in two of our local schools (not as a rebbe). The TA we get is higher than the teacher discount he'd get. Rebbes get the highest discount and secular studies get far lower. But rebbes pay is not so high. In Baltimore, it's not crazy high of a discount in addition to paycheck.

I didn’t listen to the podcast, just wanted to comment on what you say
Disclaimer : We are paying full tuition but struggling financially
Ok here is my opinion: I dont know what the solution should be, but I think with the economy & prices today, most families are struggling to pay tuition way before 5 kids .
Not to menthion what happens when you hit high school .
I would say roughly most frum families , Tristate & out of town are at max able to pay full tuition comfortably for 3 kids .
Yes I understand it’s a generalization & it doesn’t cover the super wealthy or the very poor . Just trying to make a statement.
So what should people do ?
Stop at 3 ?
What I am saying is, yea there is def a tuition problem
But is stopping to have kids really the answer ?

I just don’t think most people would be ok stopping at 3 kids
There has to be other solutions
But yes , salaries aren’t keeping up w/ tuition
And yes frum lifestyle has more expenses
All that we can agree on
But really what’s the answer ?
While we are dreaming here 😂, I personally think there needs to be a revision in the laws & federal govt should pay for private schools
Is that ever going to happen ?

If the government gives money the schools will still charge full tuition claiming they were in deficit before and now they are finally getting what they need. As seen when nyc paid for prek and yeshivas still charged full tuition. Now that schools are desperate for ppl some reduce the tuition.

Look at Florida. Each student gets $10,000. So what happens? The school raises tuition by at least $10,000, and nothing has changed. Maybe you’re paying slightly less than the previous years, but nothing to write home about. And in Ohio-you’re locked in from when you start paying tuition but I doubt the schools see more donations, and in Ohio you’re not allowed to charge lower income families more than the voucher. So the choice is have money or don’t have money. There’s no middle class. Poor people will go to voucher states and people who don’t make the cutoff will go elsewhere, unless they have a good reason not to.

If you add in free tuition to a rebbes pay, plus parsonage, it’s pretty good. And if the Rebbe or Morah is the main breadwinner, they get Chasdei Lev etc. I know of families here (Baltimore) where both parents are teachers/Rebbeim/Morahs and they seem to be doing fine. Maybe they’re not. But if they get wic and medical assistance and don’t pay tuition, and possibly get other assistance, they can sometimes do better than a family in a higher income bracket.

BH you are not making the scholarship decisions. And I'm saying this as someone who pays full tuition.

What do you mean the "TA" you get? What is TA?
