Do you call black tights- tights and light colored-stockings?
Basically when you say tights, does it mean black? Bec otherwise you’d say stockings?
Debated this over shabbos. Is this location/community specific

[quote="Debbie"]I call them tights; I'm English and tights can be anything from 5 denier to 250 denier.
Stockings are generally held up with a suspender belt/ garter belt; the self hold up ones are generally known as either knee highs or thigh highs.

Tights for all colors. Stockings sounds old fashioned and I don’t like saying the word panty in regular conversations with people!

UK English
Tights = whole legs and pelvis covering to your waist in any denier. One piece
Stocking = thigh highs, any denier
Knee highs = knee high, stocking /tight material
Leggings = footless, usually thicker material mostly for exercise but can be worn under clothes
Socks = ankle or knee length in thicker (usually cotton) material

Agree. But also, in my UK circles anyway, we also call knee-highs "pop socks". In fact when I was growing up, that is all they were ever called.

My mother tried to sound trendy, and very awkwardly referred to them as pop socks. It never stuck. I'd forgotten that term until you mentioned it.

Thin, sheer or partly sheer hose that reach the waist are called pantyhose. Tights are opaque, heavy, sturdy and suitable for elementary school children or winter wear. Stockings are hose of any type that reach mid-thigh and are held up by garters or by a band of tight elastic at the top. The sheer ones also used to be called "nylons." Socks are hose that reach anywhere from the ankle to just below the knee. They are usually heavy and sturdy. If they're made of the same material as pantyhose, they're usually just called knee-highs.
Then there were leg warmers, which were heavy knit footless tubes like sleeves for legs. They were introduced as a means of keeping dancers' leg muscles warm when practicing in chilly studios and were adopted by wannabes hoping to imply that they were so physically active that they needed to keep their calves warmed up at all times. They disappeared from the fashion scene quite a while ago and are therefore due for a comeback.
