My, my, my how very arrogant…. Have you not read the comments here and how people perceive you? It doesn’t seem so.

Obviously not. The word narcissism comes to mind.

No one ever said that. And your proof that you go on specific threads where people are asking for help from those who know the topic, is really ridiculous. You really sound hateful.

I don't mean explaining everything to the last detail. I just mean: have a little bit of awareness that not everybody is from your place. Know your audience. |
But nobody knows everything. How is every American supposed to know what is and isn't an American thing? It goes both ways. There are Europeans who are convinced Americans don't know about electric kettles because our electricity is usually 110V which they believe is not enough to boil water for some reason. And on the other hand, someone once posted about squash, and the Americans didn't know what that was and wondered why someone would mix a little of the vegetable into their drinking water. But it's always either "haha, normal misunderstanding, nobody's to blame," or "haha, stupid ignorant Americans."

If I open a thread regarding any country or profession that I am unfamiliar with I don't expect a detailed explanation and education about something which doesn't pertain to me. |
Don’t be offended, this is the same person who touted how “brilliant” Kamala Harris is and actually said she looks up to her and would like to emulate her! Take it from whom it comes…

Comptroller wrote: | Why do so many Imas from the USA act as if the USA, or even their little town in the USA (Lakewood, I'm looking at you) was the center of the world?
they post questions without specifying locations, as if it was logical that it could only be in their neck of the woods.
They treat other users as if the were automatically from the USA.
Isn't it very provincial to believe that your place is the center of the world? |
Mostly because the vast majority of people on this website are from the us. Its in english and for frum imas. So majority of those people are in the usa.
Why do you take offense to this? Where are you from is your country even English speaking?

Comptroller wrote: | Well, to be completely honest: One of the reasons I am going on this site is to learn more about America, to get information that is not so easy to come by outside the country. For example that you call you retirement funds 401k and things like this. So yes, I am doing my part of the work. But there are users on this site who completely ignore the world outside their 4 amos. |
So then you understand clearly that this site has mostly americans?!
Sounds like your just trying to stir up drama.
Side note, I find it very bizarre that you want to learn things as you say Quote: | “to get information that is not so easy to come by outside the country” | sounds stalkerish, why do you need this information? We are not some sociology experiment

OK, seriously. Maybe you never made the effort of learning a foreign language, maybe you don't know how it works. On the one hand you have to learn the grammar and vocabulary, so that you will be able to construct correct sentences, understand what people say and express what you want to say.
However, there is an aspect more difficult to grasp in a language, which is called "idiomatic". "Would a native speaker use this expression?". That's the language as it accumulated over time, and it might seem quite random, so it's much harder to learn than words from a dictionary. So when learning a language, you can benefit from being contact with native speakers.
Furthermore, every language has a more general part, used by everyone, and more specialised parts, which will be only used by parts of the population, who have a certain profession, a certain hobby, etc. That's also something that is hard to learn outside the country.
So all in all I am happy to benefit from a forum with many native English speakers from different parts of the world, who also discuss "specialised" topics I am interested in.
On the other hand, I found it a bit exagerated when a thread was opened to bash israeli Imas for giving their opinion on questions that were not explicitely restricted to an US audience, but where they should have guessed that it was only about the US and so, according to this OP, their opinion was uncalled for.
And that was not the first time I was taken aback by navel-gazing of the US part of users here.
So I wanted to remind them that this is an international forum, and it is not restricted to native English speakers either, Mrs. Crystal!!! |
I am curious. How are you able to write all these grammatically correct, super long and detailed posts in English? You are not a native English speaker and don't live in an English speaking country. We have our fair share of posters for whom English is a second or third language and it is obvious a mile away.

And yes, I see the spelling and grammar errors native speakers make. |
You can write perfectly but have trouble with common terms like 401k? Doesn’t add up.

Comptroller wrote: | See? That's where you cannot see the difference between language and culture, and that's exactly what I am talking about.
"retirement fund" describes what it is: a fund for the time when you retire, and in most languages there will be a concept described more or less with the translation of those words.
401k is an accumulation of numbers and letters and it does not mean anything, it's just a code. It probably refers to some paragraph in some law which says that you can make a retirement fund and maybe deduct the money you pay in from taxes.
Anyway, it is a law specific to the USA, an expression specific to the USA, and even a native English speaker from Australia or UK will not know what 401k refers to.
Can you see the difference? |
You can’t tell me you can learn the ins and outs of a language yet get stuck on common terms. If you did spend time learning all the mistakes then surely you came across terms every American uses in every day language. You aren’t really making much sense. Something is off.

I'm sorry but it is. Remember me, I moved to a new country. My kids command of the Hebrew language is absolutely amazing for the amount of time we have been living here. Israelis are utterly shocked when they hear my kids speak. But they have been immersed in a new country which helps a ton. And writing long, thoughtful essays in Hebrew is not easy. Reading a lot of Hebrew requires a lot more concentration.
It's just very hard to believe that you are "learning" English.

I am surprised that you have such a hard time making that distinction. |
Are you using AI to help you? You are constantly using words that someone who doesn't know English well wouldn't use. Not to mention no grammar and spelling mistakes.

But this, essentially, is the theme of this thread. |
You seem really fixated on certain things. I know you think you are the most intelligent and well rounded in the room. But you come across as arrogant and ignorant.
