I like anything that isn't sweet so either sour dough or a nice crusty water challah. I never really enjoyed the sweet eggy challah everyone else likes.

Same but I don’t bake challah weekly. I freeze and bake when we need

I think sourdough is the most overrated thing in the world. I hate sourdough.
I usually bake regular challah (not every week, but enough to freeze for a month). If I can't bake for some reason, I buy regular challah. Sweet, eggy, rich. Yum.

Sour dough is a fad which I am waiting to pass.
I make challah every week, regular traditional Ashkenazi braided challah.

For Shabbos I bake regular challah (white spelt flour, eggs, salt, oil, suger/honey) but I add activated sourdough starter and it’s the best of both worlds! , I put in less yeast.

I bake both. I don’t have to bake every week. I freeze the surplus and bake as needed. Every family member prefers sourdough (even most of the grandchildren!) but I like to have regular challah in case we have other guests.

Voted other since I make both. We love them both.
To the poster who said sourdough is a fad doesn't know real sourdough people, I've been baking for years and not planning to stop anytime soon.

Exactly the same! I have been doing this before the "sourdough trend" started. It was the traditional way.

What’s the sudden hype on sourdough? I always knew of it as a healthy bread that only tastes good toasted.
My question is why did people suddenly decide it’s instead of challah? I never hear anyone saying “I do rye bread instead”. So why sourdough?

I bake yeast challah for shabbat, sometimes I throw in a little bit of sourdough, when I have leftovers.
I bake dark sourdough rye bread for the week.
that's my minhag: dark sourdough bread for the week, white yeast challah for shabbat.
I suppose most families in Poland, Belarus, Czechia, Slovakia had more or less this minhag. I don't know about Hungary and Russia.
Has it really been lost in so many families?
