Teaching. Yup. Not the best paying job of course but it’s what I’m good ( ok modesty aside , great) at and allows me to work on my kids schedule . DH works . His business not doing well. I feel like I need to bring in more money from a side job. We have so many extra expense now, braces camp etc and we need more income . I hope it’s temporary.
I’m not quitting teaching, but looking for a flexible job that I can do on the side from at home .
I am extremely capable and organized. I also have strong writing and editing skills.
I think I’d love to edit people’s work but I never took an official course ( teaching writing though for many years ) but I’m open to any suggestions .
I can’t commit to certain hours because I have kids at home and juggle around their schedules. Thinking that summer is a good time to get into something as I’m not teaching then

Tutoring seems the most obvious option.
Some parents like to utilize the summer to bring their struggling child up to grade level. Especially common when switching schools.
Hatzlacha!

I was (or tried to be) a proofreader and editor for many years. I will not say it can't work for you, but it seemed more connected to mazal then teiva. Meaning some women get gigs doing it, and I always had large spans of time between projects.
If you want more derech teiva, what I mean by this is more of a guarantee, id recommend checking out the switch I made, to bookkeeping. You can teach yourself with online learning (my public library has free tutorials) or learn from other frum women. The jobs can often be done from home and are not dependent on specific hours.

That was me. I didn't say I make 60k over the summer. I said I work at a side gig over the year including a lot of extra work in the summer.

Try applying to work for Data Annotations. It involves editing AI responses and pays $20+ an hour 1099. Flexible hours, you work as much or as little as you want to.
Be very detail oriented when completing the entry exams because they imbed tricks to make sure you’re smart and detail oriented enough for the work they’ll have you do. I didn’t manage to get in, did the second test late at night and my head wasn’t fully there . But someone on imamother did after I recommended it to her.

I know it's not exactly in line with your area of expertise, but teachers who don't work over the summer can make a lot of money running backyard day camps or "in-between" camps. I know someone who makes at least 12k after expenses taking in 20-22 three year old and 3-4 high school helpers.

How did you find work proofreading? Did you need to have any specific credentials and did you need to do any specific course/ training ?

Go through your teaching materials and assemble them into a curriculum package with a teacher's guide. You can sell those and advertise alongside them that you also can create custom curriculum materials for the grades you specialize in.

You can tutor. Maybe try to become one on one of the online platforms. College students are often looking for writing tutors.

I didn't have any connections... I spent many hours visiting publishers websites, finding the email address, and sendong them my resume..in the email I wrote that I am looking for part time freelance work. This tells them no commitment, so they feel comfortable to send you jobs. Obviously you won't be taxed when they pay you so you'll have to pay your own tax as a freelancer.
Re the experience, this depends on where you are sending.
I have a master's in creative writing from a secular university because I am a bal tshuva (I would NOT go down that road again, if anything this program is what opened my eyes to the secular world and made me become religious!). My point to share here, is that in many circles I felt this degree was actually a negative against me. The Jewish publishing world, even less religious parts, is not interested in the secular pedigrees when it came to writing, as far as I saw (for good reason).
I would start by narrowing down the type of editing you would do. Examples,
-medical or scientific reports,
-magazine articles,
-newspaper articles,
-blogs/web writing,
-books - non fiction
-books - fiction
-reports/pr/business
Of all of the above, reports and business corporate stuff pays the best, and medical and science. But it's still not amazing, just ok. Blogs can pay ok too. Everything else is very little.
For a course, try to find a good copyediting course online (copyediting basically means grammar). There are a lot of scams out there so beware. You should find a free e course or something cheap.
Most publishers/clients will ask you to do a sample for them before they officially send you work. Sometimes they will pay for the sample, sometimes they tell you they don't pay. They hire based on the sample.... That's why I wouldn't put much money into the course, because they care more about what you actually can do than a special program.
