It doesn't necessarily say that about him. It MIGHT be saying something about their marriage and him feeling he was valued as a husband only because he was able to provide a high standard of living.

Anyone who doesn't understand addiction would blame the wife.
As someone who understands addiction (unfortunatly), the husband seems to have done some great addiction work. This is evident in his narrative as he takes the blame and doesn't blame his wife. If he was still mired in addictive thinking he would be blaming his old boss, his wife, his childhood, the whole world really...everyone but himself.
Such a tragedy he learned this too late to save his marriage.
