taking the entire family away by air on vacation

We took the kids to Florida a couple of years ago. Hotel was free thanks to credit card perks. Airfare was $10 for everyone, used points.

Paid for Uber and food. Did 1 trip. Otherwise we walked alot and enjoyed the sunshine.

When you hear that your SIL just decided last minute to go to Israel for the whole of Pesach to a full on 5* Hotel.

When they had their first barmitzva in the Waldorf Astoria in Yerushalayim (all flew in from NY) with a 5 day event and hired a chassidish chazan with a choir of boys to make the atmosphere. When you felt like a backwards idiot for only having 1 shabbos outfit and no manolo shoes when their 15 year old girls changed every 3 hours and had the 6 inch beige stilettos and the main topic of conversation for the women was how many sheitals they had brought with (5-8 was estimate)...

When your BIL facetimes you so the kids can speak and you realise they took an unplanned vacation to Thailand with a personal chef and their live in nanny (for their 1 kid) for a long weekend. Because why not.

When they say "I only fly first class if someone else pays, otherwise I fly business. Sometimes the chairs don't even fully recline" and you can't remember when you last had to renew your passport because that is how long it is since you went out of state for a vacation. Or had a vacation.

When you still live in a starter apartment 12 years down the line (and look after your in laws - their parents) while they live their best lives........

No I'm not bitter Wink

When someone commented that they go to Disney every year I was thinking “wow. To be that wealthy”.
I very very much doubt we will ever be able go even once.

And now I’m reading here about insane insane wealth. Haha my imagination doesn’t even go there…

When I was engaged my FIL gave my DH 10k for his wedding suit. I remember thinking, so this is what it means to be rich. Nice.

If you are looking after your in-laws, think about how rich you must be in mitzva dollars!
I know it is a small consultation when everyone is wearing a beautiful shaital and going away for pesach, but keep your eye on the big prize!

Nothing. Most of the wealthy people I know look like regular people.
The ones who splurge on extravagance are probably not as wealthy as you think.

-Has a house with more than 7 bedrooms in an expensive area (I'm thinking of the US)
-Entire family going to Israel (grandparents, siblings, all grandkids) all expenses paid, fully booked tours, restaurants for the meals, many hotel rooms for everyone
-Owns a penthouse in one of the central Jerusalem neighborhoods
-give generous tzedaka (like lots of thousands!)

True stories :
When you buy your summer home with one months interest of your assets.
When you fly from London to your favorite restaurant in Brooklyn, and return right after dinner.
When you spend 100k on a bday party
When you sponsor an extended families trip to Israel for the Torah you’re givin in.

When you commission a private jet from the Swiss alps to attend a chuppah in Antwerp and come right back.

My husband went on a trip recently with his brother and a few of his brothers friends. He know one of the guys was a billionaire but didn’t know which one. Guy A was a big shot so dh asked his brother if he’s the billionaire. His brother laughed and said na he’s just a regular guy. Guy B is the billionaire.

Guy B was just a modest plain nice guy! Dh never would’ve guessed

When I hear a young newlywed complaining about how she's so boooored all day with her DH out learning and she's just waiting all day for him to come home already...
Girl when I was a newlywed I worked full time so we could afford a roof over our heads and food in the fridge, I barely saw my DH besides for a few minutes in the morning while I was running out the door, and an hour or two at night trying to keep my eyes open while making his dinner. Not everyone has a rich daddy/FIL that can provide full support (or any support for that matter).

So you fly a total of 12+hours in a day to have dinner? Doesn't sound like fun to me.

When I see people walking around wearing clothing that is in good condition (not ripped, stained, worn out).

I wore the same pair of sneakers on a daily basis for about 4 years, until my tights were starting to get holes from rubbing against the pavement... Most of my "new" clothes are hand-me-downs or from a gemach, and usually damaged in some way or several years outdated. I don't understand how "regular" people can afford new clothes so often, while paying for rent/mortgage AND utilities AND groceries AND tuition AND all the emergencies that come up... I would actually love if someone can explain this to me!

Im not sure what the fixation on couches is

wow they're wealthy:

If they can afford to pay for experiences and not only things

though

fine ingredients foods wines
comfy multiple cars
a boat or two
fine silver and art
furniture linen and wall decor that tell a story

are all displays of wealth
