I don't have experience on this topic but in general if you have no experience or resume, even if you are good at what you do, you don't get paid top dollar. You earn your way up. If it was my dh I would say take it for 1800 and next year you have something on your resume and can ask for more. If he has no other offers 1800 is better than nothing. If he doesn't take it, next year whose to say anyone will give an inexperienced person more money. The amount of money the guy who is paying has is irrelevant...just because people are wealthy doesn't mean they like to part with their money.

I agree that if he has no prior experience, he should take the amount offered, gain experience, and then ask the "going rate" after he has a couple of years experience.

My DH gets paid $3000 for maariv and mussaf all three days and possibly krias Hatorah all three days including mincha on Yom Kippur, and ne’ilah. He gives back the maaser to the shul. We live in a medium out of town community and this is a small house shul.

My dh is a Sefaradi chazzan for yamim noraim. He's been doing it over ten years. The first years he got around $2-3000 I think, now he's getting more like 6-7. This is for everything, all tefillot on rh and yk plus kriat hatorah and derasha, sometimes a shiur. In general the shul makes more than this on yamim noraim from selling aliyot, petichat haheichal, etc so his salary is covered from that. Even in smaller shuls. It's a huge amount of work both in preparation and on the days themselves.

per teffilah is 3x right? so hes getting $7500?
I read all the responses from here to my dh he thinks he should just accept it, but he doesnt know if he should say can they do it for 2000.
how old is ur dh and how long has he been doing this? does age matter? my dh just turned 30 and has been laining on shabbat for the past 2 years so its recently new |
Just want to clarify, that when I said per tefilla, I meant it as shacharis R’H x2 and shacharis y’k. Sorry I wasn’t clear.
But from all the other responses that came in overnight, it seems to me like chasidish shuls pay more (or at least the ones I know!), even for pretty new balei tefillah. (My husband is helping a shul find a Baal tefilla for R’H shachris, and offered it to a friend who is good, but never davened before and I think he’ll be asking around 1500-2000 per day).
In any case, wishing your husband hatzlacha and he should be a good shliach tzibur and May all the tefillas be answered for a Shana Tovah and Shnas geulah vyeshuah

As an aside, he make a few thousand for 1 hour as a chazzan at a chuppah.
Maybe he can branch into that as well.
He would have to train under a well known Sephardic chazzan and go to a few chuppahs to get an idea.

The ones ive seen and that are used in my community and this one were visiting are the cool type on instagram and stuff. My dh is soo not the type to do that but thats a really good idea otherwise about maybe training or shadowing

amen!
I was under the impression sefardi shuls would pay more, the ones I heard that hire the israeli ones pay upwards of 7k. 1500 a day is a lot of money! oh well. maybe theyll give my dh a bigger bonus. turns out its going to be about 30-40 men and some women might join. wish they would offer more and not be so stingy since the owner of the home is very wealthy...
but like s/o else mentioned its better this that not get paid at all right?

My husband was offered 10k to be Baal Tefilla of R”H and Y”K.
This was before covid and inflation. He said no and they upped the offer to 15k.
He didn’t end up doing it in the end.

I think 7k is average (for just let’s say mussaf)
Though dh friend lucked out and makes 30k for r’h & y’k (And doesn’t necessarily do a better job than my husband or others I know, just his good Mazel and name out there).

OP - please make sure that all his expenses are covered and he is taking home $1800.
If it were me I would ask if it’s possible to get $2400. But make it clear to them that you are VERY interested

finalized this morning, we are staying by a family friend and having some meals there. and I have a cousin in the neighborhood going to them as well. my only expense would be two hostess gifts but they asked me to bring dessert so that wont be expensive
I think my dh is going tonight to meet the guys uncle (the owner of the minyan). how can he ask in a nice way for more than 1800? what if they tell my dh to fly a kite?

If your husband has no professional training I don’t know how much you can ask for
Btw, I’m sure your husband knows this but each community has their own piyutim they sing and style as well as minhagim.
He should ask the shul which machzor and nusach they follow

Real professionals (ie real singers) get 10-25k (or more!).
Just starting out 1500-2500 is pretty fair.
