George Orwell 1984
Charles Dickens novels (I especially remember the Pickwick Papers and Great Expectations)
Do they allow Mark Twain these days?

I would do:
huck finn
hamlet or macbeth
a steinbeck OTHER THAN the pearl (that's a bit boring, it's done constantly anywhere from 7th to 12th grade. leave it to some other teacher)
for fun I would do winnie the pooh as real literature (rereading it as an adult is very different than as a child.)
old man and the sea is good and short with lots of analysis to be done.
how many books do you plan to cover?

altho in tenth we got assigned jane eyre and I got out of it by saying that I was frum...I really didnt care abt the being frum part, I just wanted to get out of reading the book, and it worked. but I really do think that jane eyre was kinda inappropriate.

I'm also teaching 9th grade English next year...here are some I'm considering, but use discretion, as some may not be appropriate for some schools:
House on Mango Street
Lord of the Flies
Night
The Secret Life of Bees
Things Fall Apart
Ordinary People
Plays:
A Doll's House
Twelve Angry Men
Inherit the Wind
Antigone
A Raisin in the Sun

I think Lord of the Flies was the most horrible book I've ever been forced to read. I would never, ever give it to my students to read. Ugh.
You people read so many books in school. Now I see why my secular education was considered so low-standard. We only read one full-length book in ninth grade - A Separate Peace - and the rest was short stories. Tenth grade - only A Tale of Two Cities, and probably nothing else; we had a really bad teacher.
How did I manage a 98% on the regent?
