I have taught 9th grade English. I did teach A Separate Peace, as well as The Wave. I have essay questions & vocab sheets for both books (individually and comparing/contrasting their themes as part of a final exam). I'd be happy to share what I have with you if you give me an e-mail address where I can reach you.

In older grades I have taught Frankenstein, which has tons of Biblical allusion and good/evil imagery. I've also relied on a careful selection of classic short stories and poems to round out the literature curriculum.

You can also try classic plays: Our Town, The Glass Menagerie, Death of a Salesman. Not sure about the language in those - you'd need to check for yourself.

Is the dogs & snow book someone mentioned White Fang?

I strongly suggest that you run your proposed curriculum past the principal (I remember one principal who rejected my selection of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich because it has some pretty strong language). You don't want to get into a situation where parents complain. It's better to choose very, very carefully at the outset. Many of the books suggested by other people in this thread could be problematic for 9th grade.

If I think of other books I've forgotten, I'll post again.

Looked up my ancient notes. We did Great Expectations - ok, and Green Mansions - yuck, can't believe we did that with all the religious junk in it.

We also had a reader with lots of short stories (O Henry etc.) and poems.

Aren't there books that every 9th grade class gets in your school? Why are you starting from scratch?

I did the Pearl in Seventh Grade, Goodbye Mr. Chips in 8th grade.
In 9th grade I did Julius Caesar and A Separate Peace.

I remember doing a strange book in 6th (?) grade that is probably also appropriate for 9th grade called Tuck Everlasting.

What about books by Mark Twain--Huckelberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

Doesn't the school you'll be teaching in have a curriculum in place or someone there who handles the curriculum??

Some of my favorite high school books not yet mentioned were: Cry the Beloved Country, Brave New World, 1984, & Walden Pond by Thoreau. Catcher in the Rye was okay, but we read that in junior high.

Ones I did not particularly like included : The Great Gatsby & The Grapes of Wrath.

Most of the books I remember reading in 9th grade have already been mentioned. What about Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes?
