It helps as far as having more hours without tripling the prep time but not planning to. I am slowly cutting back on teaching hours as my business grows.

In NY you can start teaching with a BA + teacher prep, but need to get a master's degree to get your professional license within a certain timeframe--IIRC 5 years. Not all states require this. Many teachers do additional courses to get to the MA+30 step.

If you have a BA, and are in NY, the most straightforward route is an MAT with initial teacher prep. (There are two MAT programs, the one for people who have no teacher training, and the one for people who did education as part of their undergrad program and now only want to get their full license.) This is a full time program as you will need to do student teaching. I'm not sure how to accommodate this portion of the program (which was certainly mandatory when I did it) while working. There are also alternative prep programs which help you get the degree while working, but that's typically in an urban, harder to staff district like NYC, and you may not wind up in the best schools. Also, frankly, I don't advise paying the extra for somewhere like Teachers College unless you're looking for an unusual program, at least for the MAT. My friends who did TC didn't feel any better prepared than I did at SUNY.

If you want to work in public schools in the NYC suburbs, you will need that MA. The good districts can afford to be picky and they are.

Ty. For how many periods? My pay works out to approx $43,000 for 20 periods a week. About half day.. so technically if I worked full day at this job, could make same as you if yours is full day .
