Sorry but that is what happens when you rent out space to another family. I do laundry when I need to- that's why I pay extra to have my own washer in my unit! I work all day (not some "full time is 9-3", I am out of the house from 730- 5:30). I should magically be able to fit all the laundry my family needs before 8 or 9pm? I have one kid who still wets the bed. An infant who spits up all the time, over everything and anyone. Kids who need uniforms. Dh and I need work clothes...
That's not counting saying hello to my kids, eating dinner, homework. .. I throw in a load at 6am and transfer before work. I throw one in after work... I am not your neighbor as I go to bed before 1am but honestly, if I need to do laundry I will do laundry!

Sorry but mentshlichkeit doesn't go out the window because you pay rent. I actually was in the same boat as you for a long time and it was really challenging but I didn't use the machine late at night except twice when I had an emergency.

If you really can't manage to do that, move your machine not to be over the neighbors bedroom

Thank you.

I guess that bec I never ever had this problem with others, it didnt occur to me that someone would consider making washes that hour, until 2 am, normal.

In all the years Im living here, no one made washes at 2 am even with tiny babies.

Having a different schedule is not unmentchlich. If you communicate that it bothers you and they make no attempt to accommodate you, THAT is unmentchlich.

Most people are sleeping at 2am (or trying to). But for a night owl its normal. Likely clueless about the noise.

O think so.

At 2 am I tried muffling the noise with my comforter over my head, but it didnt help.

So politely let them know that you’re terribly sorry, but the washer and dryer make a lot of noise and shaking downstairs. Would they mind trying to avoid doing laundry between the hours of x and y? Thank you so much, you really appreciate their consideration.

You're the owner - who put in these machines?

Ring her up and say that you made a big mistake putting in those wonderful new vibrating machines because the vibrations are heard below... its fine generally, but not so at 1:30.... see what she says.

Tenant bought her own machine and like I said earlier, all washer dryers Ive had or tenants have had, over many years, made similar amount of noise, its the hour thats the change now, and the problem.

I live in an apartment complex with shared laundry facilities in the basement. There’s a big sign that says no laundry after 8:30. While I get the concept of not disturbing the neighbors on the first floor I frequently break the rule because I work full time and can only go downstairs after baby is sleeping (I can’t shlep my baby and my laundry down multiple flights of steps and my husband works until about 9. That said I do try to keep it to before 10. I do not do laundry at 1 am!

My washer is on now at 5 AM in Israel LOL

Honestly never thought of it as an issue.

Though we never hear anything from the apartment above or below us so I assume they don't hear from us either.

I think we can assume that they aren't setting their alarm to go off at 2 am to wake up and throw in a load of laundry. Presumably these are their normal nighttime hours, and doing laundry is a normal nighttime activity.

All you need to do, OP, is communicate with them that it bothers you. There's nothing wrong with being a night owl, and nothing wrong with doing laundry at whatever time you are normally up. There is only a problem with doing so when you know it bothers others.

Remember that most washing machines are relatively quiet, and they may not expect the sound or vibrations to travel very far and certainly not to disturb your sleep. Since in this case it does, just ask them nicely not to do it during your normal sleep hours.

Most states have laws about noise in multi-family dwellings, it’s call “quiet enjoyment.” You can’t actually make as much noise as you’d like.

I am not sure doing laundry violates "quiet enjoyment" of a dwelling. You cannot have a party, loud music, construction etc during common sleep hours. Laundry is a normal apartment noise.

I can just imagine the call to the police non-emergency line (which is where you call in my city for noise complaints). "But they are doing laundry!!"
If that is an actionable noise complaint, then I want to complain about my upstairs neighbors wearing high heeled shoes and their kids/grandkids running around at 10pm.

Like I think I said before, I don't do laundry at 2am. But some of the posters on here say we are not menches if we did it past 8. I only get home after 5:30! Would you rather me get up earlier and do it at 4am so I can be done before I have to be out at 7:30?

I think any noise-making over a bedroom, between midnight and 8 am isnt right. That leaves 8 am to midnight. Thats a lot of hours.
