I tip 20%.

These people are shopping for me and they are driving to me using their own cars.

Why would I tip less than what I would tip a waiter who brings food to me at a restaurant or someone who does my nails?

Instacart workers earn almost nothing from instacart and rely on tips for their income.

Yes it is expensive but if you can't afford it shop for it yourself and don't exploit low paid workers.

Nice that you can afford to tip 20%. It’s absolutely not necessary, and they choose to take these jobs. Tips are a bonus, not a must. You should tip something, I usually give a few dollars.

Tips are NOT a bonus in the USA. It is a necessity to tip in certain circumstances because otherwise you are just a cheap selfish person and people will most definitely think that of you.

Do you think tips are a bonus for waiters or other services in which tips are part of the wage structure. If you can't "afford" to tip appropriately in a restaurant you can't afford to actually eat in the restaurant.

If you can't afford to tip so that the person has a living wage, don't use the services because you are exploiting workers.

Is this your opinion or the opinion of Instacart workers? Because I'd think they'd rather have a less well-paying job than no job. But maybe I'm wrong.

(I don't use Instacart at all because I find the markup in fees and tips so high. I keep getting free trials but never placing an order in the end after seeing the prices. Should workers thank me?)

I am not a driver but I use Instacart almost every week to have groceries delivered.

Since when is tipping between 15% and 20% a must for a waiter or a manicurist or a masseuse? It just is what is considered the appropriate amount in the USA for tips.

Some things are accepted as appropriate etiquette.

OP asked. A 5% tip would be considered to be very low.

I again state - think of what this person is doing for you and the time it takes for them to do the job well.

For better or worse, at least in the USA, most service people rely on tips to provide most of their income and to not tip appropriate is exploiting low paid workers.

I have no idea what that "source" is be doubling pay is a bit deceptive as Instacart only pays $7 for each BATCH which often includes three separate orders - all of which have to be shopped and delivered to three separate locations. So doubling their base pay could literally mean being paid $14 for the "assignment"

Again don't ask what amount of tip is appropriate in terms of being perceived cheap and then attack someone who is pointing out that YES you would be considered cheap to tip 5% just as you would be considered cheap to tip 5% in a restaurant or to your manicurist.

Now you can say who cares because I am cheap LOL

but that is quite a bit different.

The minimum allowed amount is 5% on the app. The next lowest is 10%.
At restaurants they automatically add 18%.
If Instacart demanded 20% they would make that clear on the app. There wouldn’t be options for less

Shipt drivers also rely on tips for their income just like all gig delivery workers.

Your annual fee gets you reduced or free delivery charges. This amount does NOT go to the actual delivery people but is kept by Shipt.

Instacart also has an annual fee option so that "delivery" over $35 is free and you are charged a reduced service fee.

Not to be snarky but I think that says something about their clientele and how many people would NOT tip since it is completely not the normal protocol in every other restaurant in the USA including many kosher restaurants outside of Brooklyn.

Again just because tipping is theoretically optional doesn't mean that it isn't expected in most situations.

Instacart wages are about $13 per hour before tips, according to the source posted above. In-store shoppers get paid about the same but don't get tips. (Uber makes about $15/hour AFTER tips, for comparison.) Tips are nice and very appropriate but it's not like they are waiters getting paid $3/hour.

It is not possible to shop two orders and deliver them in one hour. Think about the time it takes to park; to get the items; to pay for the items; to load them in your car; to drive to the customer and then to unload the order AND then even if they immediately got a new batch they would have to drive to the store to start the process over again.

It is ONLY in a very few states that Instacart was forced to pay minimum wage for hours worked.
