here is a question for all of your englanders:

we were envited to a wedding in england (didnt go as it was too much money from Israel).

the invite said chuppa at 3 pm and then the party at 11pm. we heard that there is some law that you can not get married at night in england. is that true? or just a bubamisee?

we also thought that it was really cool, getting married, being able to be with your new spouse for a bit and then go back and party with friends.

Usually the Chupah is any time between 3 and 5, then there is a reception. Some people have the reception before. The dinner is usually around 7pm and the dancing and Sheva Brochos start around 10ish. Here in the UK there seem to be two kind of invitations Chupah and Dancing or everything. But I cannot imagine that you would have only have been invited to the Chuppah and dancing seeming you where from Isreal.

I have just discussed this with my husband and as far as we know there are no such laws, but that is not saying there isn't it would not surprise me if there was.

I realize now that b/c we were not going, we must have thrown away the RSVP card which probably had what time the seudat mitzvah was.

wow, so a chatuna can take all day, huh?......in some ways that is really weird to me, but in other ways, that is sooooooo nice, and more relaxed:)

At our wedding we did the civil marriage in the yichud room (I have pictures so I remember it.) Maybe that is why the wedding is during the day. Although if it is a winter wedding it could be dark.

Yes, english weddings start much earlier. Also, our chuppa and dinner were in 2 locations, quite far from each other, so everyone needed time to get from one place to the other.

You also have to wear 2 seperate outfits! A day suit for the chupah, and evening wear for the dinner! When my mother goes to weddings in England she always has to shlep almost her whole wardrobe.

And you go home in between to rest and change.

nice to see this topic.... my sister got married by night and did irt the american way... I've been to plenty weddings like taht in london, which yo ucall a follow on.

and oh yeah last year, I did have to change twice, but just my top.

luckilly for me I did not get married in england.. I think dh wold have fould it really wierd an english wedding....
