Fruit drink / milkshake recipes?

My son doesn't eat much, and it just so happens my sweet parents got us a food processor with all these different attachments on it. I'd like to try to make fruit drinks and/or milkshakes. Does anyone have any tried and true exact recipes? I'd love to hear!

I wish I could help. My kids will only drink vanilla or coffee milkshakes. If they see a color in them - blech.

I personally, LOVE banana milkshakes. Just use 8 oz of milk a banana, lots of ice and sugar to taste. Maybe a tsp of vanilla. Yum. Although I do this in a blender. Don't know if you can chop the ice in a processor. Can you?

Smiley I am assuming there is a blender attachment, correct? Because that is what you use to make shakes.
Whatever ChossidMom wrote: start with milk and whatever else and use at least 4 ice cubes per cup of milk, which thickens it. Just be careful with the milk, if your DS is sensitive - they can get to drinking yummy sweeted cold things and then have a reaction.
I would not put too much stock in the kids drinking really healthy shakes. That's the stuff myths are made of. The second you put in the sugar, there goes the benefit, IMO.
Your question also brought up the possibility of a juicer: do you think your kids would drink juice that you make yourself? My kids love it. One asks for carrot juice (he's from DH's side of the family). It's a good way to get lots of healthy calories into a kid. I am just sad that apples are too $$$ now for me to make apple juice for my family.
Off to make a choco-coffee shake for my overheated 9 yo.

I put in ; milk, bananas (freeze them first) and strawberries (fresh or frozen)

fruit smoothie - orange juice, mango, bananas, strawberries, tinned pineapple - some or all of these.

for the summer, freeze some in cups with sticks in. I made the smoothie pops on pesach and they were a big hit.

I dont think it will work for my son either but I'll try. If there is a chunk of anything in it, forget that. If he sees anything that goes into it, forget that etc....
And, yes I have the proper attachment for it.
A few questions:

1)Vanilla meaning what? Vanilla extract?

2)You mentioned 8 oz of milk,a banana... about how much sugar and vanilla? And if I'd do a strawberry shake, about how many?

3) Raisin, you mentioned frozen bananas- so you put them through the blender thing frozen??

Vanilla extract.
The frozen fruit thickens the shake, as does the ice.
You have to play it by taste with amounts.
Strawberries aren't in season anymore where I live - can you still get them?

In the stores I see frozen melon, kiwi etc.

Smiley - just get creative.
I don't measure. Maybe a tsp vanilla.

Also, a little secret - I put HONEY in my shakes for the kids. Not alot because it will taste to strongly. But in 12 oz of milk I put in about a tsp. of honey and I add some sugar as well. See if you can sneak in the honey. It's just as fattening as sugar but if you read up on it on the internet you'll see it's so unbelievably good for you.

Yum I am so excited to try (just have to figure out how the whole processor works.. im not the world's best cook).

Get creative? Unfortunately I am the most square thinker one has ever met! Wish I could think out of the box and try things freely but I havent gotten there yet.

In Geula there is a bar that sells fruit drinks. He fills the cup with frozen fruit (acc. to the customer's selection) tips the fruit into the blender and adds milk or water just to cover the fruit and then he blends it for a few minutes. He says that he adds yoghurt to the milk he uses. No sugar. If you want a sweeter drink, you can add a dried date.
My favorite is banana, mango and strawberry with a date. With the frozen fruit, you don't need ice.
Freezing bananas is easy: peel the bananas, cut into pieces and place pieces apart from each other on a baking tray. When they are frozen, place into freezer bag and return to freezer until ready to use. I think you can probably do the same with other fruit in season. It's a good solution if you have too much fruit in the house that is likely to spoil if not eaten.

Also, don't expect the child to love it and drink it all up first time around. Let him see you drink it, tell him how tasty it is and if he wants to, let him sip it. It make take time until he is prepared to drink a whole cup.

(BTW, I tried making this with a hand-held stick blender, but the old blender broke Sad. Does anyone else do this with a stick blender successfully?)

I never put sugar in - theres no need usually. Smiley, some blenders are strong enough to do ice, but some are not. If they are not, most can handle frozen fruit. even my hand blender has no problem with frozen bananas, and strawberries.

Tamiri, here you can buy frozen strawberries. if you can't you can buy and freeze them when in season.

I put in a jug about 2 bananas, a bunch of strawberries, and then fill with milk. this makes about 5 cups.

I've been living in galus for too long, I forgot about the frozen fruit option. When I mentioned that stores have frozen kiwi, mango, melon etc. I meant, as Ribbie wrote, the milk shake/frozen yogurt stands. I am not a fan of those things and neither are my kids, but if your kids will eat that -'shkoyach.

All winter my husband and I were obsessed with fruit drinks!
We put in about a half of a bag of frozen strawberries and a frozen banana in the blender and 1 cup of water and blend. it makes abt 1 and a half full cups and they are sooo good!
My husband adds sugar to his and I sometimes add splenda- a couple of teaspoons.

I relied on milkshakes for complete nutrition for about half of one of my pregnancies - only thing I could keep down.

Here are my tricks:

1. If you want to boost the vitamins, etc. add a scoop of slim-fast. It will also bulk it up a bit, make it thicker and creamier

2. Freeze your favorite flavor yogurts or just vanilla. Then pop one into the blender, add fruit (fresh or frozed) and milk, and give a whirl. The yogurt is sweetened, and cold and creamy, and you dont need to add ice cubes, which dilutes it, in my opinion.

Others have made great suggestions about flavors and combinations. My family's favorites are strawberry, chocolate, and coffee. When youre in the fruit section or the yogurt section, ask yourself what you think you would like to try - better than trying to be creative in a vacuum.

Yea, in truth I dont expect him to eat it 1st time around or any time around but it's worth a shot. Those tricks dont work with him - the more I try to show him how delicious it is, the more he wont eat it.

Most ppl here gave "recipes" for 8-12 cups. If I make for say, 4 cups, I assume that works too, just smaller measurements, right? What would be approximate measurements?

And is it gross if it is a water base? I have no problem making a milk base (espcially since I get more fat into him that way) but it would make the whole machine milchig.

Water won't be creamy and rich. You can get an extra blender jar+cover+blades for parve. With my first baby, I had little jars + blade for blending fleishig baby food (I later learned they don't need such mush, but so much for first time mom).

I make milkshakes for my 2 year old with yogurt frozen bananas frozen strawberries frozen blueberries and orange juice and just blend. does not need sugar. oh and he loves to drink it with a straw.

the funny thing is whenever he sees me take out the blender he runs and gets a cup and a straw- but sometimes I am making garlic dip for shabbos and he doesnt realize that it is not milkshake!!

questions about the frozen fruit:

- does it matter if the bananas are already a little overripe when you freeze them?
- can fresh strawberries be frozen for this? and do you just put them in the freezer as is, or do you have to do sth to them first?
- does it matter if the strawberries are a little overripe when you freeze them too?
