No. A 4 month old can't have enough food to replace 2 full bottle feedings yet!!!

I don't think a 4 month old will be content with food and a little breast milk instead of 2 full breast/formula milk feedings from 9-4 daily.

And I don't think that mother should be made to feel bad for buying formula during the shortage even if technically the baby won't die without his formula.

Do you pump?
My sister has a 4 month old. She nurses. She's a lousy pumper. Baby is at babysitter from 9-4. He needs 2 6 oz feedings. She pumps and gets 2 2 oz feedings. Which means she needs 8 more oz or 2 scoops daily.
She called me crying frantically. She has 1/2 a small can left. Her friends and coworkers were shaming her for buying formula when she could pump. So she's been pumping round the clock. Just to get those extra 8 oz.
You're saying just replace a bottle feed with a jar or cereal feed? At 4 months?
I bought her 3 cans of formula and told her to stop listening to everyone guilting her.

You're a great sister.

I have nursed all my babies successfully, but I am a terrible pumper. When one of my babies was in the hospital and on NPO (nothing by mouth) I pumped to keep my supply up. I was relieved that my baby didn't need it, because the amount I was producing was probably less than half of what they would need. And this was with a hospital-grade (it was hospital-provided) double pump, with me able to physically see my baby while pumping. And no time limits!

Nobody should be shaming a mother for continuing to feed her baby the way she has been doing up until now.

The shaming should go on those who had or have the capability to actually DO something about the shortage. Not the mothers who need to feed their babies.

I went to the grocery store yesterday, for groceries not formula, and the only formula they had was two types of kendamil, and they had probably less than 10 cans of each.
Edit: oops, quoted the wrong comment. I meant to quote the one asking if it was all formula or only certain ones.

Enfamil still has many varieties available on Amazon. I’m stockpiling on my specific ones even though I still have 3 tubs and normally wouldn’t need more until next month. Not taking any chances.

I think if anything there should be a push for those who can but just don't for no good reason. Save the formula for those who absolutely need it.

This is so wrong 😬

Possibly those with allergies. There’s still plenty of regular varieties available.

there was a large recall on abbott formula + delays on getting shipments of materials from overseas + inflation

I hope not but I think its just a fear so every one is stockpiling. whats really scary is babies who are allergic/gassy and needs specific kinds formula thats now hard to find

A major formula plant was shut down after a few babies became ill.

I haven't heard of any starving babies. There are still many resources a mother could tap into before she would allow that to happen. However, people have been substituting formula brands they don't usually use and they don't always work as well for their child.

Babies with special allergies can call Abbott and get recalled formula directly from them, on a case by case basis. The chance of the can being contaminated is minuscule (out of thousands of babies who used formula from Abbott, there were 4 babies that may have gotten sick from the it.) In a risk/benefit analysis, I guess getting those cans is better than nothing. Or maybe they could test each can, I don’t know…
