Fancy goodies at a sholom zochor

I suppose you remember - I certainly do, and vividly - my thread on sending something for a lechaim that wasn't fancy enough and the kallah refused to put it out.

DH doesn't think that the cookie platters I send for sholom zochors are very exciting. I could send pies, but how do you serve a pie at a simcha without taking it out of the disposable container and it making a mushy mess

So, my query to you all is, what can I learn to make that's fancy but requires not too much effort or expense?

A good bundt cake with an easy confectioners glaze, delivered on one of those inexpensive plastic dishes (that look like crystal) with a decent doily.

Who wouldn't love a really good chocolate cake with a mint glaze on a platter decribed above?

? I think cookies are fancy.

If they are yummy it's great. People at a shalom zochor are coming from dinner. And, in my hood, mostly men who quite frankly, don't care...

you can make simple sugar cookies, and use cookie cutters in the shape of a rattle, or baby carriage. then u can ice them in blue and white frosting. its pretty simple.
I have done it, without the frosting. had no patience for that.
I used a rattle, and laced a blue ribbon thru each handle. it looked really pretty.

I always send the cookie platters all ready to put on the table. DH just thinks that cookies are "too much to eat" after a full seudah.

I always send rice crispies treats!!!!!!!!!!! Not the most beautiful thing, but always devoured by all who attend!

I am currently planning my sons sholom zochor. We were discussing the food last night and I actually told my husband that I prefered cookies over cakes and pies. Its way easier to serve and less of a mess. Also if kids come its more kid friendly. Cm don't worry so much about this. What you are doing is very nice and kind, not everyone is an artistic baker (I know that I am not one at all). Any person that doesn't appreciate it, doesn't deserve you kindness.

I have a friend who always sends for Shalom Zachars:

Chocolate covered pretzels, dipped in sprinkles.

(the big pretzels)

It looks beautiful, and also like it was hard to make!!!

I don't see what's wrong with a pie. Personally I prefer things that taste good rather than look good. (And men appreciate that all the more) And theres nothing worng with sending it in a foil dish. Its a sholem Zachor, not a wedding.

But there is nothing worng with cookies, or anything you feel like making!

I have done this for engagement parties, but could work for a shalom zachor. I bake shaped cookies with sticks attached. Then I ice them and make a bouquet of flower cookies. Maybe a bouquet where all the flowers are in shades of blue. Or maybe if you have/can borrow cookie cutters in baby shapes, bottle, bib, bootie, heart, ice them in lt. blue and white and make a baby bouquet.

You ladies have posted some really nice ideas (good to keep in mind!) however, if there will only be men at the sholom zochor, I wouldn't bother with all the frills.

Like Raisin and others have said, men just like simple, simple, simple. I have found that they wont touch anything that looks too pretty... it's as if they are afraid of it! Rolling Eyes

On the other hand, for women.....

Anything in miniature looks fancy. How about making bundt cakes or pies- but in small? I guess you would have to invest in a pan, but it sounds like you may do this type of thing often.

I'm tempted to get a few of those pans, believe me ..... I'm just not sure how to ice the "baby" cakes once I've gotten them perfectly out of the pan, that is .....

I think mini chocolate bundt cakes sprinkled with some powdered suger look great, ad taste great.

Another idea is cupcakes, with different colored frosting and sprinkles look really fancy. And again they taste great.
