It's all about the sugar. If the marinara sauce was mixed with a jar of grape jelly or a cup of ketchup, it would be an acceptable Jewish recipe. Or if there was some sort of pastry involved -- puff or phyllo or something.

Hamburgers are acceptable if modified --dip a hamburger in canned pie filling, roll it up in pastry and call it a hamburger-fruit roll-up, and it gets served.

Jews love their sugar and white flour. We're non-traditional here, but I confess we go through a fair amount of sugar here, as well.

either rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes, haven't decided
roasted beet salad with pecans, arugula and dressing (still undecided what dressing, probably something creamy)

No dessert because of evil Weight Watchers

Clarissa, you sound like such a good cook! I love reading your menu every week. (Too bad you had takeout last week LOL )

How do you make the beet salad with the pecans?

Thanks. I make different things all the time, so sometimes they're successful and sometimes not. My family are my guinea pigs. My husband thinks I'm a good cook and my son thinks I'm awful.

The salad is a new recipe for me. I'm making it because I bought two bunches of beets. I'm actually taking two recipes from Epicurious, and taking my favorite elements out of both of them:

http://www.epicurious.com/reci...../4270
http://www.epicurious.com/reci.....11613

I'm substituting pecans for the walnuts, I'm using roasted beets, arugula and romaine, and am still figuring out the rest. If I have time I may consider making them candied pecans, but I may not bother.

I think it's funny that so many people are put off by having spaghetti and meatballs (or something similar) for Shabbos meals. To me, Spaghetti and meatballs is harder to make than shoving a chicken in the oven and it's more special because we have chicken during the week all the time, but only eat meatballs on shabbos.

And we never have chicken during the week because it's so expensive, but we do have hamburgers and meatballs because chopped meat is cheaper than chicken and goes further. So you see, it all depends on where you live and what you have available. (Although, to be perfectly honest, I'm very traditional when it comes to Shabbos food. They didn't eat meatballs, burgers, tuna and miso in the alte heim, so my mother didn't serve it for Shabbos and neither do I. )

I have quite an easy Shabbat as we've been invited out for dinner Friday night - yippee! - and she has absolutely forbidden me to make anything (my food must be really bad Crying ).

I have my business partner's five kids for lunch on Shabbat as he and his wife are going to a barmitzvah so I can get away with making bought shnitzels as that's one of the only things they eat!!

Gefilte fish loaf
Mushroom salad
Humous
Israeli salad

Shnitzel
Rice
Green beans
Chicken salad

Fruit salad
Peach pie

How do you make the meatball chulent? The times I tried using chopped meat instead of regular meat and bones, the chulent was not eaten by anyone.

About the meatballs on Shabbos, we sometimes eat that during hte week so I try to use the chopped meat in different ways, ie instead of chulent, I sometimes put elbow noodles, some marianra sauce, water, and chopped meat in the crock pot an let it cook together. It turns out so soft, it evens seems cheesy- the kids love it, and its simple to make.

my husband actually makes it. it's SO good, people request it. he doesn't make meatballs. depending on how many guests, he puts it one or two frozen (only frozen!) packages of hamburger meat, on top of most of the ingredients to give it a cushion from sitting on the bottom.

if you want I'll ask him his recipe and give it to you. we love it here!

PLease tehilla if you could ask him I would really appreciate it, I cannot get the chulent meat that often , and I have tried dozens of vegetarian chulents that end up getting thrown out.

Oh, my challah is always on the computer, especially when I'm on Imamother. All the hot air coming out of it helps the dough rise.

How do you make zucchini caviar? Does it involve fish eggs?

"Caviar" is just the name. No fishy stuff whatsoever. Great dish for vegetable lovers and people on diets.
Dice one large onion and shred 2 medium carrots on the shredder with large holes. Sautee in oil. In the meantime, peel and shred 4-5 medium zuccinis. Add to the sauteed onion/carrot mixture. Season with salt and pepper, lower flame (add a bit of oil, if necessary) and ler simmer until zuccinis are soft (u don't need to cover it). When they r almost done, take 3-4 plum tomatoes and dice them. Add to the mixture and mix well. Taste to adjust salt. Once all vegetables are soft and most of the liquid is evaporated, turn it off. It is absolutely delicous warm and cold. Try spreading it on a piece of bread - YUMMY. This is a very very old recipe. Very Happy

DH hates tomatoes, but will eat tomato sauce or marinara sauce (go figure!). Can I substitute the sauce for the tomatoes and, if so, how much sauce would you recommend? It sounds yum!

Not sure how much sauce, but you just need tomatoesfor some color. I think that stewed /diced/canned tomatoes will be just fine. Play around with the tomato sauce so that the whole dish is spreadable but not too runny. Good luck!

Very Happy I also love both sweet potato & coconut, which is why this recipe intrigued me. My good natured husband went all over town looking for unsweetened coconut for his perfectionist of a wife, but we couldn't find it so I ended up just using sweetened & it looks like it came out good anyway.

I posted the recipe on this thread.

This sounds fantastic! My husband always says he's allergic to coconut, but he really isn't. This frustrates the coconut-lover in me. I'm making this one soon.
