there are plenty of Jewish dvd's and online you can look at chabad.org for kids' videos
if they are watching on youtube it can start feeding in other stuff that you would probably not want

I was just going to say - I’d feel more comfortable with dvd’s rather than YouTube, even YouTube Kids. I felt comfortable letting my kids watch YouTube kids until one day after their video/movie was done, it automatically played a x-mas movie. I’m not trying to shelter them. We live in a community where my kids are exposed to x-mas/ Halloween etc. But while it’s ok for them to know the stuff, it’s quite different when they watch such movies (I don’t mean movies that happen to mention it. I mean movies that are specifically about these things). It’s definitely better to use YouTube Kids - rather let them mistakenly watch x-mas than inappropriate stuff, but just be careful to be on top of them and check in every few minutes.

Her not watching at home vs her not talking about it in school is two totally different things.
My kids (and other kids I know) talk about things in and characters in shows they’ve never watched. Kids talk.
As for watching, we also go on and off depending on the case/time. Generally I allow one episode (20-30 mins) during supper and on Friday they get about 1-2 hours depending how much work I have to do.
They generally watch ninja lego garbage which I don’t love but they do recently it’s more peppa pig , paw patrol (the super pups) and other random stuff. They watch on YouTube rarely but mostly amazon prime kids.

I don't like Bereanstein bears.
They're quite insulting and mean to Papa. He's always the butt of the jokes and it called fat.
Don't think it teaches good middos. Would prefer my kids to watch paw patrol or my little pony.
Although I would really prefer them not to watch at all except one in a while. It's not good.

I let my kids watch on Netflix kids
Not on school days, mostly on weekends and off-days so I don’t go off my mind. |
What do you love about these threads? Are you trying to come across as 'cool'?
Does people being concerned about their children's yiddishkeit bother you?
Do you know what your kids are watching on Netflix kids? There is nothing innocent in movies today, not even kids cartoons.
My nephew has Netflix kids on his ipad. I saw him watching something most charedi parents would consider inappropriate for children.
My children do not watch during school weeks. Only during school holidays. Even then it's very limited. I see what it does to their concentration and their interest in learning.
When they do watch, its either very old movies or things like fireman Sam... With good lessons for kids.

Nothing to do with clean. I don’t like when my kids watch the shows they like because I don’t need them discussing it or talking about it with friends. But I don’t even like them watching uncle Moishy that much, it’s just plain bad for them to tune out of life staring at a screen for a few hours. They ALWAYS are crazy kvetches after they watch something. Always!
OP, I live in Lakewood also, seem pretty similar to you. I’ve gone through all the same stages, really hard times they watch too much, other times none at all. I would love to get none at all to be the norm

I agree, I feel like children who watch too much can't focus and concentrate. Their brain gets fried. A lot of educators complain that after watching too many movies, children find it hard to concentrate in school. Gemara, chumash, maths, history in a classroom is way too boring compared to movies.
A top child psychologist mentioned that children with learning difficulties who have too much screen time are much harder to help.

There are personal reasons I won't go into, why my kids watch various films.
I don't think parents are watching the movies they're giving to their kids. I am talking across the board, Barney, Elmo included. Practically every film today gets two dads or two moms

Yes, I'm in Lakewood and we consider ourselves quite yeshivish.
But some of my kids have behavioral issues (ADHD and autism spectrum) and when they are bored they kill each other and make me meshuga. I have a chronic illness (chronic Epstein Barr and intermittent migraines, plus a sleep disorder), and I am NOT creative. I'm just not. So I don't know how to entertain my kids when they're bored and nothing makes them happy.
So yes, I let them watch DVD's, way more than I should. And I let them watch YouTube on my phone, but only in the same room as me so I can keep glancing at what they're watching.
What else can I do? It helps me cope.

When they were younger (a decade ago) and I was in survival mode they watched old VHS videos like Berenstain Bears, Sesame Street, Curious George, etc. so I totally identify with some amothers here!
Today, I see the disastrous results of too much screen time, video games, and inappropriate content in my classroom every.single.day. In today's liberal climate it is extremely hard to find children's videos without inappropriate content.
We asked a chinuch expert for realistic guidelines a couple of years ago when DD wanted to buy herself a Gameboy. While idealism is great, realism is better. Our girls are allowed to watch Jewish DVDs and use the Gameboy on non-school nights, and all vacations. Electronics are put away by 9 and motzei Shabbos by 11 because it takes them a loooong time to settle down afterwards. Friday afternoon after helping out they can watch a video or use the Gameboy until an hour before Shabbos. We'd rather buy the DVDs than borrow so we find ways for them to earn them.

We're chassidish and I now live in lakewood, and I do let my kids watch Dvds on vacation days and chol hamoed, which was so exciting for them..
We have agent emes, twins from france...and lots of tv shows, which we buy in target throughout the year..
Although they did beg for the ipad, which is now only mine..

I'm yeshivish, live in lkwd and do not allow my kids to watch anything at all. I don't care about content much, more about the effect of screen time on their brains.
They occasionally watch something by a neighbor, but they know to ask permission. Usually during school vacation and very hot weather.
I provide them with dozens of library books to read, and keep on refreshing the reading supply. I also encourage card and other games.
It's not much of a struggle even though every single classmate and neighbor does watch. They're just used to our opinion about it.
And btw, 2 of them are really difficult adhd kids..

Chassidish (Vien type)
I allow my girls to watch on Chol Hamoed and on some of the long Motzei Shabbosim.
I try getting Jewish DVDs, but I also let them watch some American Girl Movies and they have watched The wizard of Oz.
I screen everything before they watch and I try to limit it to just what I mentioned above.

I have one child who loves watching, literally anything! She can watch the same stupid play 4 times in a row!
While it's very tempting to let her sit in front of the screen for hours, I noticed that she gets addicted and acts crazy afterwards. She becomes aggressive and irrational! Content doesn't matter, it's just what movies do to her brain.
I limit screen time to Chol Hamoed, sometimes summer vacation, and when I'm desperate for uninterrupted rest!
Chassidish btw

I'm regular Lakewood yeshivish, somewhere in the middle. Watching for us would be only on special occasions, like Motzoei Shabbos in the winter, or over vacation, and would be like a Rachel's place video, or something like that.

We are yeshivish litvish.
My kids watch torah treasures, we have a subscription. Most days they will watch for about 30 min. Sometimes I let them watch the piano guys music videos or a national geographic documentary on weekends, and that's more like 1-2 hours.

I dont live in lakewood. The biggest problem I find is the addictiveness and once kids get older it is harder to find videos that are ok. When I Ann able I do a no video ever rule. When I haven't been well I did netflix over you tube bec youtube has ready bad commercials.
