Cholent (maybe a new recipe without beans)

can I have the recipe for the beanless cholent - me and DH both hate beans!

I have to get it from my sister; she told me this week about it but I didn't write down the ingredients.

I'd glady share - we like the purple LUb cookbook one very much - but I had to get a no cholesterol recipe from the internet - no oil or eggs.

can I have the recipe with no oil and eggs? is there shortening?

So, the cholent recipe isn't exactly a recipe, but here goes:

Saute onion
mix 1 T. each soy sauce, honey and ketchup and add to onion
add meat, potatoes and barley or wheat berries
salt and pepper and water

I'm going to make mine without onion and will brown the meat and add the condiments to the meat instead of to the onion.

Hey, I thought the wheat berries was my original idea! Great cooks think alike, I guess Wink I tried it once, when I was out of barley and it gives a really good flavor. Now I alternate, sometimes wheat sometimes barley.

almostamom: I serve the patties cold/room temperature. Enjoy, and let me know how you liked them!

amother: the sweet & sticky green beans are from KBD Short on Time. If you need the recipe, let me know and I'll post it.

I make the potatoes as follows:
Boil 5 lbs pot, mash
Add 1/2 stick marg while pot. are hot.
Fry 1 lg. onion and add to pot.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
I also added a little non-dairy creamer to make the pot. more creamy.

I then place it in an oven to table dish, make heaps in the pot. and brush with melted marg/oil. Bake in oven on 350 till golden brown.

Creamy Italian Pasta Salad:

12 oz. Pasta, boiled and drained
1 c. quartered cherry tom.
1/2 c. chopped green pepper
1/2 c. sliced black olives
1 c. mayo
2 T. red wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dried basil
1/4 tsp. pepper[/b]

I use puff pastry shells. I bake as directed, remove the tops and fill right before serving. Hope that helps!

pinktichel: thanks! I think I'll quarter the recipe for the mashed potatoes (well except for the onions because I love carmelized onions) and I'm in a garlicy frame of mind so maybe I'll try to roast a few cloves.

About the creamy pasta salad: what type of pasta do you use? It looks very yummy indeed.

Bashinda: I use the twists for the pasta salad. Cookielady actually suggested that I fry garlic with the onions, but I forgot. I'm sure it'll be yum!!
