What special food do you make for Rosh Hashana.

We eat the basic...apple and honey, for a sweet year... a head of a fish...etc... I have heard of people making all different kinds of foods some are for parnassah...

sefaradim are also supposed to do "alubia" it is a white bean that is a segulah for procreation.
nothing sour, nothing bitter, no nuts..... I am mixed, I am lubavitcher with sefaradic backgrounds...
To say the words" she tihie le rosh ve lo le zanav."..
to eat a pomegranate the second night.
I don't remember anything else.

We eat black eyed peas, beets, leeks, gourd, cabbage, spinach, and carrots in addition to the regular apple dipped in honey etc.

(It's fun getting creative with all these foods: pumpkin pie, leek soup, spinach quiche, black eyed peas patties etc. Smile )

I've never actually made the entire rosh hashana meal on my own... we usually eat at my aunt's and make a few things to help out. The leek soup isn't something I personally have made, (my aunt makes it), so I don't have the recipe. Sorry! Wish I could help...

For the leeks, I make patties like latkes. Absolutely delish and they look lovely next to all the other simanim:
Tamar (date) = sheyitamu soneinu';
Rimon = sheyirbu zechuyoteinu;
Apple with honey = shana tova umetuka;
Kara (we use pumpkin) = kra roa gzar dinenu;
Rubia (black eyed peas) sheyirbu zechuyotainu;
Karti (leeks) = sheikartu soneinu;
silka, selek (beets leaves or beets) sheyistalku soneinu etc...
You can make nice little dishes out of these foods and not need too much of a meal after.
I will never put a fish or sheep head on my table, in a pot or my fridge or anywhere in my house so the above had better be enough :-)

Recipe for Rubia/Alubia (everyone calls it something diff) from aish.com sorry I don't have the patience to translate, maybe you know Hebrew....
רוביא (לוביה)

"יהי רצון...שירבו זכיותינו ותלבבנו."


רוביא מוזהבת בבצל ודבש Rubia sauteed in onion and honey

בסיר עמוק מטגנים, עד להזהבה, ראש בצל קצוץ במעט שמן. מוסיפים את הרוביא הנקייה, מתבלים בכף דבש ובמלח (כדאי להוסיף גם מעט כרכום וכמון), מוסיפים מים (לרוביא יבשה יש צורך בהרבה מים), מביאים לרתיחה ומבשלים הרבה זמן על אש נמוכה עד לייבוש המים והזהבת התבשיל.

* אפשר לבשל את הרוביא היבשה בישול מהיר בסיר לחץ, ואז לסנן ולבשל עם הבצל

since dh is in uman usualy I just eat the night meal with the kids. it's too much for me to go out with them, they get tired and things start late so this way io can start when I want and they can go to sleep when they need. so I do the basics.

ido apple in honey, fish, carrots, and pomegranate. that's also what my father used to do. for myself and kids it's enough for me. I don't need more than that. maxi'll buy he rest ready made.

Leek Latkes: no recipe do an internet search. Sorry to be lazy, but that is what I did last year and what I will do again this year. Here is a Hebrew one from aish... maybe they have it in Eng also

קציצות כרתי

לחתוך את הגלדים (נגד כיוון הסיבים) לחתיכות באורך 3-4 ס"מ, להכניס לסיר עם מים, להביא לרתיחה ולבשל כ - 5 דקות. לסנן ולצנן (בַּמסננת).

כאשר הירק מתקרר, לסחוט אותו בידיים ולטחון במעבד מזון או במטחנת בשר. להוסיף ביצה, פירורי לחם, מלח ופלפל שחור וכן תפוח אדמה מבושל ומעוך. ליצור קציצות ולטגן על אש בינונית עד להשחמה.

leek patties

3 large leek throw out the green, cleaned and separated
1-2 eggs
salt and pepper to taste
breadcrumbs to hold together
1 mashed potato (optional)

Boil leeks till soft
drain leeks
grind in a food processor
add egg and spice and breadcrumbs and potato
drop by teaspoonful into a hot greased skillet, fry both sides till lightly browned
