In my husband's family they used to have a wimpel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimpel and use it at the upsherin. It was common in their community at the time but totally disappeared, not even sure dh's great grandfather had one.
He thought it had disappeared from everywhere before I found this: http://onlysimchas.com/galleri.....id=10
and asked him if he knew what it was
- did you hear about it?
- did you hear about people still doing it today?
- did YOU do it or plan to? if yes, where do you find the big sheet? do you embroider it yourself or have it done? what do you embroider?
Enlighten me!

You better believe it still exists. All the Torahs in our shul here are wrapped with Wimpels. B"H my husband doesn't have this minhag, because I am not great with the embroidery business - and both my son and my husband have three names!!!!!

I mean, my son is a year so I personally have not yet done it. we will IY"H have the wimpel and wimpel party when he turns 3...its like almost instead of the upsherin party, which we dont hold of--we cut hair whenever
I dont have that much info on it, as I did not do it yet...

Most people bind the sefer Torah (after gelila) with a sort of velvet thing with a clasp. Yekkes use a wimpel instead. (Under the mantel.)
