Which brand sewing machine is better, Singer or Brother. I read that Singer Sewing machines are not as good today as it used to be....can anyone with experience in this field confirm this or suggest which brand is better? Looking for sewing that does embroidery /monogramming too. If you know of any particular models not more than $200 pls suggest.

Following

I'm looking into one for my daughter. I don't know the first thing about sewing machines. She took private lessons and courses at FIT this summer. I'm planning on having her grandparents chip in with me to buy her one for her b-day in November.

Just got the brother 2600i. It was only $80. I was very impressed by it. Very sturdy, easy to use and sews well. Has many features.

Think this is the one rated top on most reports...there is a Singer one as well that does embroidery.. does the one you have also do embroidery / monograms?

I personally prefer Brother over Singer because it's motor is so much quieter.

To do monogramming, you will need a computerized sewing machine, which can be found < $200.

You also need to service it yearly because threads may get stuck inside the machine and jams it. I hope it doesn't happen to you, but it did happen to me.

I love my Brother.

Which machine do you have? There is sooo much out there.
I'm trying to decide between:
brother se400
Brother laura Ashley cx155la
Brother hc1850
brother xr9500prw
If you know of any of these let me know please.

I recommend laura Ashley cx155la. It has rave reviews on Amazon.

I want to clarify the different machines you listed here.

se400 is an embroidery machine. It has a built-in embroidery design library.
cx155la, hc1850 and xr9500prw are great for sewing, quilting, simple embroidery stitches and monogramming.

What you can do in se400 you cannot do in the other 3.

What do you mean by, what you can do on the se400, cannot be done on the others? Is it better for sewing and embroidery / monograming? I want a machine that sews and does monogram / embroidery

The se400 is designed for those fancy embroidery stitching that requires a hoop.

The other 3 models are not designed for this. They can do simple embroidery stitching and simple monogramming only and the machines do not support the hoop or equipped with an embroidery library.
