I'm thinking of surprising my kids with a cricut machine for chanukah. I have no idea how to decide which one to get. Please help me out here.

I found an article on between carpools about it. I'm not so sure anymore. Sounds way to complicated I think with many supplies needed.

One thing to keep in mind is that you need running internet/wifi for it work.
I gifted it to my teenage niece who really wanted one. Unfortunately, she cant use it most of the time since she doesn’t have access to internet

Look into the Silhouette brand cutting machines. They don't need internet once you set up your machine with the downloads you need.

I have the maker and I LOVE it. Keep in mind you need a lot of supplies.

That's why I'm not so sure about it anymore.

How old does DD need to be to be able to realistically enjoy the Cricut on her own / with my help?

Depends on the kid. I would think a tech savvy eight year old with you available to help would work

Also following. I would like to make labels for balloons. Which one is the simplest (and cheapest).

Cricut joy is for things that are smaller like a card, label, sticker or small iron on design. The other ones can do 12 in wide designs. The more expensive ones can even cut wood and stuff.
Agree the joy is a good place to start.
You can get a bundle that comes with some starter supplies.
You don't have to get cricut brand supplies. There are other compatible companies that are less.
There is definitely a learning curve it's best for a kid who has some patience.

With the Cricut joy you need your laptop, tablet or other device to be Bluetooth compatible. There is no hard wire connecting the joy to the device. Just keep this in mind.
