I wish I was staying home tonight and cooking. But we have to go to the in-laws and walk home in this -30 celsius weather!

But for lunch:

challah
chopped liver
cucumber salad
cholent
green salad
shnitzel

for desert: whatever bubby sends.

Right now, nothing. I keep my meat and chicken in a freezer that we keep in the garage. Well since the recent ice storm my garage door has been frozen shut. Dh said that he will try to get to it today, if not, it's take out for us.

I want to get rid of my puff pastry dough from the freezer - but I do not want to make deli roll - any ideas?
I also have puff pastry squares. What should I do with those?

I have a stack of Malawach circles, which are really puff-pastry.
I haven't got a clue what to do with them before Pesach.
(I'm thinking about all the crumbs those things make after they're baked.....)

make meat burekas! I made them for Purim and it was YUM. If you want to be a little healthier use ground chicken or turkey instead of beef.

I wondered that myself actually. withhumor gave me a great recipe. The only patchke is that I used squares but I don't see why it would be a big deal to roll out the dough and cut it into squares and it gives you more flexibility on size. So you defrost the dough, roll out thin to squares.

For the meat mix I used about 1 lb. of meat, with maybe 1/4 c. matzo meal, about 2 T. ketchup. You can use the egg as well but I think I skipped it. It's like a meatball recipe. I also added onion powder and salt and pepper. About 1/2 tsp. of the onion powder and maybe 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper.

You put in the square a nice amount of meat but not too much obviously. It's hard to tell you how much. I had the pre-made squares which were large and I put 2 Tbs I think of the meat mix at least. I never measured. Take one corner of the square and pull over to form a triangle and seal.

I beat an egg and used it to brush on the borekas and then sprinkled sesame seeds on top. I baked it for about 20-25 mnutes at 350 degrees F.

Also you could make franks in blanks

but I tried it once and I don't have a good method for doing it.

you can also put mashed potatoe inside with fried onins and roll it in one big roll. you can serve it with a mushroom sauce-its yummy!

you can fry up some schnitzel and after that fry up some onions and zuccini slices (adding salt, and garlic powder)-and then add it and put it in the pastry and make a big roll out of that. its also really good!

Really? What did you do? Every time I've done it, the cake came out flakey and bakery perfect.


Kokosh sounds like a great idea for the big dough.
