shabbes morning is my time to sleep late. My kids help themselves to cereal with milk, and if I make cake, they help themselves to that, too

I always have cheesecake with a nice potent cup of coffee - my kids have been making this quick and easy recipe themselves.

I have 2 thoughts
#1 we need the nourishment in order to have kavana during davening - if we are busy focusing on our hunger pains where would that be
#2 albeit shabbos is our day of rest I do not understand how anyone could sleep late and not get their children and themselves off to shul after all isn't that what we stand for

I can only assume you live in Israel and do not know that if you have a small baby and there is no eruv you can't get to shul.

And if you are bringing small kids to Shul they wouldn't be able to stay quiet for so many hours anyway. Davening is out for me anyway, Sad

so I bring my kids for the last hour of shul (when there is a kids service to occupy them)

You say your kids make your cheesecake so obviously your kids are older in which case it is a different situation for you.

and choc.moose, it sounds like you have your source about shehakol. Would you mind telling? I'd love to know which brocho to make, once and for all instead of just wondering.

I always used to stock up on cake for shabbos morning and then I was the one who ended up finishing the whole stash. So I started buying cupcakes or donuts or something small and individual for my kids, and nothing for myself. A coffee is good enough until the meal.

A cheescake with lots of flour in the main part of the cake or eg a cheese danish will be mezonos. Or a yeast cake with a cheese filling.

So you see that Hilchos Cheese Cake are very complicated. Sometimes it's a safek and you need to take two other foods - one shehakol and one mezonos and make brochos on them. Sometimes you need to ask a rav. And sometimes the correct brocho will vary from person to person depending on how he views the cake/crust.

Wow, it's almost as complicated as Hilchos Chanuka Sufganiot (safek mezonos/ safek hamotzi) Confused

my kids are bigger - when they're little it's different.
My son would make mezonos on a cookie or something and shehakol on milk, thus enabling him to eat the cheesecake without any problem.
I do enjoy the crust as part of the yum.

now I get yesterday's chat - cheesecake & coffee - kool

Hilchos Cheesecake...very complicated. It's so surprising what "simple" things really are not so poshut!

I once asked a rabbi about the international date line re: Torah. He showed me a very extensive work his rav wrote on the topic...not so poshut!

I usually have cereal, yogurt, and/or cheese and OJ to be a good girl. My ds is young so I save any treats for later and he doesn't know to ask for them yet otherwise. What I would really like is cheesecake and cinnamon babka...especially the bottom part that gets all gooey...and a nice big cup of coffee...but I don't have an urn.
