Does anyone have a good recipe for a sauce without tomatoes or any tomato products that goes well with either meatballs or chicken balls?

There is a whole thread about this here -- search for it. If you don't find it, I'll locate it for you a little later.

When my kids were refusing to eat tomato sauce, I would sometimes cook their meatballs in a cranberry sauce. They loved it.

Here you go. This is the existing thread on this subject (search is your friend -- there isn't much recipe-wise that hasn't already been posted here): http://imamother.com/forum/vie.....16245

These meatballs go really well with the rice recipe I posted a little further down in that thread.

(Thanks ra_mom, for typing it out! Smile )

Thanks, just copied that recipe. Can you just cook the meatballs in the sauce instead of baking first?

This is really really delicious. (Thank you so much SV!)

Meatball and Dumpling Soup (one bowl dinner)

Meatball Mixture
• 1.5 lbs. ground meat
• 1 egg + 1 egg white
• 3/4 cup bread crumbs OR cooked rice
• 1/4 cup grated onion
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 tsp Kosher salt

Soup
• 1 large onion, chopped
• 1 large carrot, shredded
• 1/2 carton mushrooms, chopped
• 3 scallions, sliced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 10 cups water
• 1 bay leaf
• salt to taste
• 2 potatoes, peeled and dice OR cooked pasta/noodles

Dumplings
• 2 eggs
• pinch salt
• flour

Sauté the diced onion and shredded carrot together in a 5.5 – 6 quart pot until golden.
Add chopped mushrooms, sliced scallions and minced garlic.
Fill the pot with water and bring to boil; add bay leaf, and season generously with salt to taste.
While waiting for water to boil, combine the ground meat mixture and form into tiny meatballs. Drop into the boiling water.
If using, add 2 diced potatoes now.
Simmer for about 40 minutes.
10 minutes before soup is ready, beat eggs with some salt. Add flour until you reach the consistency of a matzo ball mixture. Drop by tiny teaspoonfuls into the boiling water.
If using pasta or noodles, place some into serving bowls and top with meatball soup.

ra_mom, do you think that would work in a crockpot?

It could work. But I think that putting the raw meatballs into the crockpot might make the soup cloudy. And I love the hue the soup gets from sauteeing the onions and the carrots together.
Tastewise, it will prob be fine.
If you have time to start the soup on the stove (saute, bring to boil, add meatballs just for 5 minutes), and then transfer to the crock, I think it can come out good.

Kosher By Design Kids In The Kitchen has a recipe called Meatballs 2 Ways. There are 2 options for meatball sauce, a Red Sauce and a Brown Sauce. The Brown Sauce does not have tomato in it. The measurements listed are for 1 pound of ground beef mixed with egg and breadcrumbs.. This is it: 3/4 cup dark brown sugar, 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour, 1 3/4 cups water, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 3 Tablespoons soy sauce. Place all ingredients in medium pot. Mix to dissolve flour. Place over medium heat and cook for 3 minutes, stirring with a spoon often. Add meatball mixture to pot. Set heat as low as possible. Cover the pot and cook for 40 minutes. (I have never tried this, I use the other sauce, which has tomato)
