Oh, and to the person who suggested the fake nose rings or the ones that close with a magnet... those HURT! LOL |
I think that it just makes it uncomfortable, and while you can put it there for make believe and just for show, your missing the whole bottom bead, the flexibility, and the tongue will probably be tense from trying to keep the darn thing on which will defeat the whole purpose...
why do people feel the need to do things behind closed doors? if its ok to fake it, why not the real thing....?

The most common reason for the tongue piercings nowadays is to enhance intimacy.
I cannot explain it on this forum, but a frozen pea can stick to the tongue for a few minutes.

It never crossed my mind that it could be a halachic issue to get my belly button pierced.
And I don't see how a frozen pea comes close to a substitute for a tongue ring! There's nothing to hold it in place.

Top 7 Reasons Not To Pierce Your Tongue:
1. Chipped or Broken Front Teeth
2. Gum Surgery
3. It can go down the wrong way.
4. Infection and, just possibly, death
5. Losing blood - possibly lots of it.
6. Lingering Pain.
7. Hepatitis or HIV

you can have reasons not to cross the street, with pictures and ramifications too if you please. seriously, I had one for a few years, and I pierced it and re pierced it on my own. this is not very common, and of course even taking motrin has sudden death dangers...seriously...do you always read the warnings on everything? |
Just because nothing adverse happened to you due to your piercing, doesn't mean it won't happen to someone else. That's like someone saying, "Hey I have eaten high calorie, highly fatty, deep fried foods all my life and it never hurt me!" Does that mean that it's good for you? Or that it won't hurt the next guy? If you were one of the people who had a cracked tooth or couldn't stop bleeding after the piercing or sustained some kind of painful injury, you would be singing a different tune. The whole point is to educate yourself before you decide to do it, just bec. you think it looks cool. If you then decide that the look is worth the possible consequences, then go ahead! But people should be aware of the risks.
And BTW, the comparison of crossing the street is apples and oranges. To live a normal life a person must leave their home, and can choose to be as cautious or as careless as they wish when crossing the street. It is completely unnecessary to pierce your tongue. You can live a normal life without it. It is just for looks.
So what do you have against someone informing others of possible adverse consequences? I wasn't attacking anyone who did it. GMAB

It didnt cross my mind either, but my mother recommended it. FYI, this was a MO Rabbi. |
Your MOTHER recommended that you use a frozen pea to enhance intimacy???? I can tell you, these are NOT issues I ever discussed with my mom!

To me all these belly, nose and tounge rings are very immature. I only see them on the crazy wacko teenagers that are roaming the streets. You'll never find even a normal classy non jew wearing them!!
I had a workmate that pierced her belly and it got alllllll infected! she picked up her shirt to show me how it looked and I almost fainted. That wuld deff. NOT turn your dh on, it'll have an opposite affect on him!! same goes for all the other piercings- to me (and I think most ppl) it's disgusting!!

Judgmental much?
Funny how so few of the naysayers don't have the conviction to stand up for their POV by using their real screen name.

No, her mother recommended asking the Rabbi about whether a belly piercing is allowed.

Mine never got infected and I've had it for many years. People get their ears pierced and that can get infected too, you know. There might be a lot of pple that think piercings are disgusting, but there are obviously a lot of people that think they're pretty. I'm not a fan of tattoos by any means, but that doesn't mean other people don't find beauty in them (although I think it's not the smartest idea to use one's body as a canvas, especially one so permanent).

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. to even those who take a motrin for a headache....seriously....its so common nowadays and the piercing parlors are quite sanitary and up to standards of the health department. so seriously... open your minds ladies

I think body jewelery is beautiful... its such a shame that it so not accepted in most frum communities and for no reason! There is no halacha against it so I honestly cant understand the negativity towards it. I'm not saying go pierce all of your body, but it is beautiful when done with taste.
I feel the same towards tattoos, however since this is against halacha and really permanent I am less 'itchy' about it.

Why is it necessary to denigrate and say others are "quite ignorant and pathetic"?
It is obvious that everyone has their own opinions regarding body piercings. Some love it; some hate it. Some think it's beautiful; some think it's ugly. Why is it necessary to attack anyone based on their own personal opinion? Wouldn't it be better just to say, "You may hate it, but I like it! To each his own"

Not the person who posted it, but she wasn't saying that it was *ignorant* or *pathetic* not to like body jewelry. She was referring to harping on the risks. In this world, everything is risky. You can die of drinking too much water. You can die crossing the street. You can die having a baby. As intelligent women, we weigh risks; we don't avoid them entirely.
Other than that, the only denigration I see here is people referring to women who wear body jewelry in rather offensive ways. I wonder if those people ever step back to think how general society might think of the way THEY dress.
FTR -- triple-pierced ears, but have let all but one set of holes close; no body piercings or tattoos; think belly rings are cute, but not on older, not-exactly-slender women like me; don't particularly like other body piercings; skeeved by idea of genital piercing, but honestly, who would know

From AskMoses
Does the Torah prohibit body-piercing?
by Rabbi Naftali Silberberg
The question is very complicated, for there are several prohibitions which piercing borders on. [There is no connection between piercing and tattooing. The prohibition of tattooing is - primarily - inscribing oneself indelibly].
The general answer is as follows:
It is permitted for women to pierce themselves for (commonly accepted) beautification purposes. However, it is forbidden for a woman to pierce in concurrence with a fad or trend because we are commanded not to "follow the traditions [of the gentiles]". 1
It is forbidden for men to pierce themselves since piercing is considered primarily a "woman's adornment."
[Sources: Deuteronomy 22:5 and Leviticus 18:3. See Maimonides, Laws of Idolatry 11:1 and 12:10.]
Footnotes
* 1. To distinguish between what is “commonly accepted” and what is merely a fad or passing trend, consult with a local orthodox Rabbi

The clip on hoop I had in my nose did not hurt at all. I just slipped it on and it did not pinch at all, just stayed there. And it looked very real, no one could tell the metal did not go through my nose.
