I think that it just makes it uncomfortable, and while you can put it there for make believe and just for show, your missing the whole bottom bead, the flexibility, and the tongue will probably be tense from trying to keep the darn thing on which will defeat the whole purpose...

why do people feel the need to do things behind closed doors? if its ok to fake it, why not the real thing....?

Darling Amother, I had one, I know. I am aware of that. but its a pea for gods sake, and its only on top, and any pressure applied to it will fall off...so pray tell whats the point?

you can have reasons not to cross the street, with pictures and ramifications too if you please. seriously, I had one for a few years, and I pierced it and re pierced it on my own. this is not very common, and of course even taking motrin has sudden death dangers...seriously...do you always read the warnings on everything?

Just because nothing adverse happened to you due to your piercing, doesn't mean it won't happen to someone else. That's like someone saying, "Hey I have eaten high calorie, highly fatty, deep fried foods all my life and it never hurt me!" Does that mean that it's good for you? Or that it won't hurt the next guy? If you were one of the people who had a cracked tooth or couldn't stop bleeding after the piercing or sustained some kind of painful injury, you would be singing a different tune. The whole point is to educate yourself before you decide to do it, just bec. you think it looks cool. If you then decide that the look is worth the possible consequences, then go ahead! But people should be aware of the risks.

And BTW, the comparison of crossing the street is apples and oranges. To live a normal life a person must leave their home, and can choose to be as cautious or as careless as they wish when crossing the street. It is completely unnecessary to pierce your tongue. You can live a normal life without it. It is just for looks.

So what do you have against someone informing others of possible adverse consequences? I wasn't attacking anyone who did it. GMAB Rolling Eyes

To me all these belly, nose and tounge rings are very immature. I only see them on the crazy wacko teenagers that are roaming the streets. You'll never find even a normal classy non jew wearing them!!
I had a workmate that pierced her belly and it got alllllll infected! she picked up her shirt to show me how it looked and I almost fainted. That wuld deff. NOT turn your dh on, it'll have an opposite affect on him!! same goes for all the other piercings- to me (and I think most ppl) it's disgusting!!

No, her mother recommended asking the Rabbi about whether a belly piercing is allowed.

Mine never got infected and I've had it for many years. People get their ears pierced and that can get infected too, you know. There might be a lot of pple that think piercings are disgusting, but there are obviously a lot of people that think they're pretty. I'm not a fan of tattoos by any means, but that doesn't mean other people don't find beauty in them (although I think it's not the smartest idea to use one's body as a canvas, especially one so permanent).

I think body jewelery is beautiful... its such a shame that it so not accepted in most frum communities and for no reason! There is no halacha against it so I honestly cant understand the negativity towards it. I'm not saying go pierce all of your body, but it is beautiful when done with taste.
I feel the same towards tattoos, however since this is against halacha and really permanent I am less 'itchy' about it.

The question is very complicated, for there are several prohibitions which piercing borders on. [There is no connection between piercing and tattooing. The prohibition of tattooing is - primarily - inscribing oneself indelibly].

The general answer is as follows:

It is permitted for women to pierce themselves for (commonly accepted) beautification purposes. However, it is forbidden for a woman to pierce in concurrence with a fad or trend because we are commanded not to "follow the traditions [of the gentiles]". 1

It is forbidden for men to pierce themselves since piercing is considered primarily a "woman's adornment."
