Today there was a total eclipse of the sun.

I remember about 5 years ago when there was also an sclipse of the sun everyone was saying that in that year of the eclipse it will be a bad one for Jewish people. Why is this? Does it mean that when there is a total eclipse of the moon it will mean it will be a good year for the Jewish people?

an eclipse of the sun is a bad sign for the non jews, not for jews. the non jews are compared to the sun because its size never changes. so too, the non jews are in a stable position, since their actions don't affect their rulership. jews, on the other hand, are given rulership in direct accordance with their actions (rashi in the brochos of yaakov and eisav explains this point). so sometimes we are small, and sometimes big - like the moon.
really, as I was watching the eclipse today, I was marvelling at the idea that such a tiny moon can completely hide the light of this huge sun. so too, may hashem completely do away with our enemies, so that only the jewish light will shine in the world.
