BTW,

With the driving on shabbos issue, I am not referring to those who are showing up at a chabad house for the first time, but to those that are otherwise shomer mitzvos, like the women on here who are mechallel shabbos by applying makeup.

the issur with make up is Tzoveya - coloring - correct? In that case is there an issur with applying only foundation just as a cover-up?

That isn't the only issur. There is also an issur of mamrachek, spreading. It is the same issur as spreading diaper rash cream and definitely applies to foundation.

my aunt used to go to a bungalow colony where all the women looked perfectly made up on shabbos, so she asked them how they did it, and they all answered that its their oneg shabbos to put on makeup on shabbos morning! and this was quite a few years ago, when shabbos makeup wasnt invented yet! anyway, when I heard that, I said ok, so its MY oneg shabbos to drive to the movies, take out my wallet, & pay, then watch the movie! Rolling Eyes

if anyone here has that same excuse of it being your oneg shabbos, I hope you know its 100% assur, and dont give these frum excuses!
Just curious. percentagewise, how many in Lakewood have that "freshly made up look" on Shabbos /Yom Tov (meaning the women are very conscious of their makeup) ?

How about if it is powder foundation, which you just pat on?

Can we start a thread on this? Because the whole topic being discussed makes me feel like I am of another species.

Me too.

What does Shabbos makeup blush mean? How can you paint your face on Shabbos? And which chassidishe Rav gives a heter for this?

What do you people do if Friday night or YomTov night is your mikva night? Do you all postpone it because of the makeup issue?

To those who replied to the poster who says she puts on makeup b/c of her complexion,
1. she says she uses powder
2. she says it's oil free
thus no shmearing and not clear-cut "tzoveya" (coloring)
Although not preferred, what do you think shabbos makeup is? It's the same stuff, probably doesn't hold as well, but same idea. Personally I use stuff that lasts, I put it on right before Shabbos, and usually I get lucky and it stays ok. I think it has to do with the chemistry between your skin/lips and what you use.

I did learn in seminary that there is a difference in the issur of tzoveya when one is covering a scar from shame as opposed to beautifying. There is room for a shaila here.

Don't judge!

I don't remember all of the details, but if the powder as oil in it (they almost all do) it is a halachic problem.

That is wh shabbos makeup doesn't work as well--it doesn't have the problematic oil.

I'll never forget when I was 18 years old and it was second day yom tov and a lady came over to me and patted me on my back and said "I know it's so hard not to put make up on." I was in a state of shock because hello!!!! I did not put any makeup. Happens to be that my makeup had stayed on remarkably well (also cool weather really helped). I also had put on extra before yom tov so that I would have a little left by the end. But really to be dan l'kaf z'chus would have been nice...

Shabbos makeup also has issues according to some poskim, but given that some women here are mamash committing issurim I don't think we should be picky about that.

I must be one of your species. (Or a crossbreed. I put on makeup solely when my dh asks me to.)

Some make up, used in some ways, is allowed.

If you can find "shabbes make up" it's allowed too (and you can "show it").

If my makeup stays on from before Shabbos, sometimes I worry that people might think I applied it on Shabbos, chas veshalom.

When I was in sem. almost thirty years ago, and the closest we could get to Shabbos makeup was prepping blush before Shabbos and spreading it (sorry, don't remember where that heter came from but people I knew did it, supposedly with halachic guidance) a halacha teacher said that to feel better about not wearing makeup on Shabbos, don't go overboard the rest of the week.

The Amother with skin issues needs to see a dermatologist to get her face back to where she can wear some Shabbos makeup and still feel good about herself.

maybe we should collect money for her, for laser treatments or some such.

Amother already said that the Shabbos makeup isn't enough for her, and I understand that - I ventured into the world of Shabbos makeup when my daughter's acne was so bad that she refused to leave the house "looking like that".

We got her what was appropriate - and she finally went on Accutane - but it was a very painful tome for her and for us.
