This will be my first time making the simanim. My parents stick to apples, pomengranates and carrots, and last year my MIL sent us.
Can you help me with - what do I use here for rubia and gourd here. Is silka - "alei selek"?
Also, with the worm issue in fish, what do you do with the fish head? I got a frozen salmon head. Can I cook it and eat as is?
Thanks

Rubia is black-eyed peas. Are they available in Israel? I think most people use squash (as in winter squash, I.e. butternut squash, etc.)

I always thought people made raisin challah for RH?!?! My kids told me not to so I won't be doing it regardless, but still...hmmm.

Not everyone goes by all the hanhagos of the Gra, even the most thoroughbred Litvaks.

We also don't generally go by his hanhagos, but this (a sizeable number of) people do seem to do. I think it might be mentioned in the MB.

And I also remember sweet round raisin challas for RH (Parkways, if that means anything to any of the Brits Wink ).

A couple of years ago, we were hosting first RH night at our place. I had my husband buy small 'simanim pamphlets' to put at each plate.

So our simanim is according to the booklet we have LOL...

Among them are apples, dates and figs, leeks, carrots, beets, black-eyed peas, fish or sheep head... this year maybe I'll put out a head of cabbage for that...

Grapes--only green(white) grapes, definitely black grapes by us. Similar to olives (no blacks, only greens).

I didn't say silka is beets. I said we have either beets or silka. Beets are called selek in Hebrew, so you can say the same yehi ratzon 'sheyetzalku oiyvaynu v'sonainu' (I think). The SA says you can say the yehi ratzons according to the language of the country.

oh my gosh, I thought my parents were the only ones who do that. They use some chrain and then say the yehi ratzon "sheyistalku sonainu" (obliterate our enemies). I have never heard anyone else doing it.

We don't eat black olives on RH?
Anything else? Did anyone hear not to eat roasted meat?

Asking us at least...

I do somewhat cringe when people say "it's just minhag". Minhag is Torah, no?

Ultimately, you need to talk to yoru rav to know what your minhagim are...bc there are so many different (and sometimes opposing) paths regarding this.

Almost all of what ensured Yiddishe life and indentity in Mitzrayim was minhagim. These are not something to be casually thrown aside, and why it's important to talk to your rav about what's right for you.

IMO, 'Minhag to not use XYZ on RH' does not mean it is ASSUR... which is how the tone of some of this thread reads to me.
