Don't buy that brand of salmon again. It shouldn't taste fishy.
If you ever do get fishy fish, soak it in lemon juice for an hour then rinse in cold water.

I don't like salmon because it's fishy. If I make it, I expect some fishiness.

The idea with lemon juice and cold water really works! I once bought seabass and it WAS NOT cheap and it smelled a little fishy so I did that and it totally worked!!

OP here, I first soaked my salmn fillet (which I had defrosted overnight) in water for some time (not sure how much) and then soaked it all in lemon juice too. didn't work. I guess next time I will have to soak it for longer.

That means the fish was not fresh, and by the way its dangerous to get fish that is old or not handled properly. Some fish carry disease and parasites! Make sure to also cook it at a high temperature until well done.

I was told to soak salmon in water with some alcohol, such as vodka or gin, for about 3 hrs, before cooking to get the fishy taste out. Worked for me.

Did you buy Atlantic salmon? I find that type to be very fishy.
Next time, try to find baby salmon.

I was told that fresh fish should not smell fishy...if it does it isn't fresh.

If it smells fishy that's one thing.
Tasting fishy is another thing.

Why in the world would you soak it in WATER? It saturates the flesh and that is not good at all.
