I'm actually pretty open about money with my kids as that's how I was raised. I think if we were very much struggling maybe I wouldn't be but I do tell them we have what we need and can afford more but don't think wasting money is a good idea.
My kids are 12 and under but I am still open about it. I actually think the secrecy around it causes more anxiety.
