Second seder, matzah time came around. DH passed around enough for everyone but me, so I went to find the bags of matzah we had leftover from lunch. I made yum-yum noises until I finished my kezais -- this matzah was GOOD! Then DH asked if I was eating the afikoman. Um... no; I'm eating the leftover matzah from lunch!
Well, sure enough, I had eaten the afikoman. And you're not allowed to eat or drink after the afikoman! And I hadn't eaten anything substantial for hours, not to mention the remaining kosos I still needed to drink!
Well, DH walked over to the home of the nearest rav, and all was well--we continued the seder as if I'd just eaten plain old matzah, and substituted other matzah for the afikoman. But now we understand why others hide the afikoman!!

I got different matzah for korech, so there was enough of the original afikoman left for everyone to have a piece.

it doesn't really matter which matzo you eat for the afikoman stage of the seder.
(sorry for the extremely delayed reaction - chol hamo'ed Pesach I was too busy in the kitchen to be bored!)

Yeah, the hiding doesn't really work unless you hide ALL the matzah.
I remember the time my brother hid it under his hat. "Gebroks!" I yelled as he took the hat off (not that it mattered to us.)
