I think that is great.
Many years ago they did a detailed piece on the Satmar as well.

I'd like to read it. Not long ago they did an article on the budding lubavitch community in postville Iowa.

Orthodox Jews seem to be all the rage in the media these days. Crown Heights is covered in the current edition of National Geographic with more sensitivity than the CNN report it seems.....

The last section really wowed me - the photographer seems to have caught on to one aspect of the beauty of a frum life.

I don't remember the exact quote, but the photographer in her voice over said something that was very nice about the sense of community that is missing in the rest of the world (and that many are searching for). I thought that summed it up so nicely.

I find it quite peculiar that although her photo essay is about Lubavitch in Crown Heights, she does not show a single picture of Lubavitch World Headquarters - 770, from the outside or inside.
She says the Rebbe was unique in that he encouraged outreach and showed only one picture that illustrates that (esrog)! Odd that she has one photo of an elderly man peering closely at a sefer and a picture of a closed Judaica store in the "reaching out" section! Connection?
She then goes on to say "another way Lubavitch strengthens their outreach efforts ..." I'm wondering what was the first way
She speaks about the shluchim and shluchos and has photos that give the viewer no clue as to how many there are for all she says is the number of emissaries is growing. Are there dozens? hundreds? thousands?
I liked the picture of the Tatty reading, surrounded by his kids.
oh, but there, once again, like at the beginning of the video, is a picture of the cemetery. Why so many pictures taken there and none of the largest yeshiva in the world, Oholei Torah with 1400 boys? or other areas of interest around Crown Heights such as the Matza Bakery, a mikva, the Chasidic Art Gallery? a Pegisha (Shabbaton)? a Tzivos Hashem rally?
Some pictures were touching or illustrative but others were ho-hum. What made her include the photos she included I wonder?

motek, I thought some of the same things as you. very strange narration, didnt seem to be very well done. I wonder at some of the pictures too. Judaica World closed? an esrog?
how about a Tanya? a Moshiach sign? etc.

There is a picture from a convention showing 1,000's of shluchim.

I know how many shluchim/shluchos are there, but it is not at all apparent in the picture.

yes, she said so
one picture of an encounter on the street hardly conveys the point
if she would have also included photos of men and tefillin, pegishos, menorah lighting, that would have given more of a sense of what Chabad does
remember, this is for the reader of National Geographic - do they know what an esrog and lulav are? what will that picture mean to them?
what's the point of the picture of the woman, two profiles?
what's the point of the picture of two chasidim, each partially visible in profile on two sides of the picture?
why did she pick that picture of that narrow alleyway (don't know what it is) with a man at the end, and a woman walking

I think that's a shot of the Ohel as well (if I know which one you're talking about), the "anteroom" where candles are lit.
I think they just chose the photos based on their artistic merit, not just for illustration purposes. For example, the shot of Judaica World closed, or the picture of the three men's silhouettes above a crowd (I think that's what it was).

well, it shows to the readers of NG how exotic we are , also sheitels, Ohel, children in talis and little one in tefilin.
I, personally, appreciate the 'moments' of Jewish life and energy caught in those photos, I don't really care what other readers think or understand.
Do you think this photo essay was supposed to be just another PR about Chabad Lubavitch peulos? It's about ''moments of life', expressions of Faith, growth and so on...

Was this woman hired by Chabad to do PR for them? If not (as I assume) then all your tainos are beside the point. She chose to portray what struck her eye; she's not trying to sell Chabad to anyone, she's trying to sell good pictures.
