Ok somewhat low self-esteem alert.
What does the phrase you look so good mean? Pretty? Good as in average? If someone says this why wouldn't they just say a complimentary word that actually means something?
On Shabbos a friend said to me you look so good! I said thanks and she responded "no, actually sooo good!", I was like thanks? I'm not an idiot I know it was a nice compliment it just felt weird. Am I just being weird?
I know I'm not ugly but after that I'm not sure where I fall...
Staying anonymous because I'm not this dumb sounding and shallow irl! Just curious!

I think sometimes people are embarrassed to give too big a compliment so they’ll say “good” instead or “stunning” or “gorgeous” or “beautiful”. It’s like when people said “low key” when they really meant “high key”

Do you think its it a frum thing?
Really not trying to fish for compliments from my friends but I do wonder how I look to the world and I feel like I get more actual compliments from non-jews than my close friends.
I really should work on my self-esteem and not need validation from anyone, even my husband...

It’s impossible for us to know, you’d have to ask your friend. Take it as a compliment.

Most people don't fargin to compliment and many are intimidated when someone looks too good.

It's very easy to accidentally sound like you're hitting on someone when complimenting their looks.

Oh please no one is hitting on someone when they tell them they look good..unless it's a man to a woman.

When I tell someone they look good I mean overall. If I like their dress I would just say that. To me this compliments your overall look it can include outfit, shaitel, makeup, accessories etc.

When ppl tell me I look so good I always assume they mean better than last time and I assume I didn't look good last time for whatever reason

No, there is a line. We may not agree on where it is, but if another woman tells you something like "wow, your body looks amazing in that dress," you'd probably be a little creeped out. Saying something vague like "you look so good" avoids the issue entirely.

I wouldn’t ever tell someone they look beautiful or stunning because I’d feeling weird using those words. I definitely would say they look amazing or so good. And it’s definitely a compliment.

It rly is a back handed compliment - bec makes you feel like- usually I don’t look good???
The “complimentor” should rly be more specific. Bh I’m a very complimentary person in general and I’ll always say- I love your outfit, or your wig looks so good- or you look so thin!

I'm so surprised at all the responses! In my community this is a very normal thing to say. It means your overall appearance looks really amazing. It doesn't mean you look good now but last time you didn't, just that now you look beautiful. I hope I never offended anyone with this compliment.
