A few other threads had me wondering.

If you feel that you’re not great at cooking, are you aware and making an effort to be better? I know many don’t prioritize food or having super delicious food.

I imagine that people who don’t make great food are clueless about it and think their food is fine.

I think I cook ok
I hate cooking but I cook healthy food and always have fresh veggies and fruit
My in laws hate my cooking bec I cook too healthily for them they are very into store bought and oily foods with lots of sauces… so my mil brings along a few dishes for her kids to eat whatever I can’t stomach her food and her kids can’t eat mine idc it is what it is
In the other thread I mentioned that I eat bread and salad by her house and mostly starve

My MIL thinks she's an amazing cook & prides herself in being a great cook. But in reality, she does not have good kitchen sanitary practice. The counters & floors are filthy, she leaves raw food & perishables out for long hours & even overnight. She doesn't cover food that goes in the freezer & the food tastes freezer burnt. I can't watch her cook, I get nauseated.
DH once asked her why she doesn't cover food that gets put in the freezer, she claims that there's no need to & the food tastes fine.

Nope. I don't like cooking and do as little as I can get away with. If I can't just put a bunch of ingredients in a pot and heat them up for a long time, I'm not interested. It's not a mitzvah to be a good cook.

How does this answer the OP. She didn't ask for a critique of your mils cooking, she asked if YOU aren't a cooking star, are you trying to improve.

I think her point was that people who aren't good cooks don't know that.

A friend of mine was just complaining that she's lousy at cooking and gets so overwhelmed and her recipes fail often.
But then she went on to tell me the kinds of things she was making. Things with lots of ingredients and steps.
Tasty food need not be complicated or time consuming.
I just made a dinner of chicken, potatoes, and squash. Essentially each made the same way -- rubbed or tossed in a little oil and seasoning then roasted.
No need to make a whole patchke. Simple, easy food can be quite tasty.

I'm not an intuitively good cook. Don't put me in the kitchen and say make something, it'll probably turn out ok at best. However, I'm very good at following recipes so my food is pretty good BH. It could be if I worked on my skills I'd enjoy cooking better but at this point in my life give me a good cookbook with good reviews and I can put delicious food on the table.

Bh I am an intuitively good cook. I can’t follow a recipe if you paid me
I understand how ingredients work together and make up all my own recipes. I know I’m a good cook because I like my food and everyone I know tells me the same.

Do you enjoy well cooked food? Do you like your own cooking? Do you enjoy eating?

I ask because I really am curious.

There is no mitzvah to be a good cook but I see in my own family how important the role of food is in bringing ustogether and making memories. Whilst I am a good cook, I can't say that I actually love cooking. It is a lot of work. But I do love making food that my family in loves and it is my love language. I think nothing makes a kid feel more cherished than knowing that his mom makes him his favourite dishes just because he loves them. I know that when I get lazy , and this does happen every so often, the mood in the house shifts somewhat. I find it's like with most worthwhile things in life, the more you put in , the more benefits you reap.
This is no judgement on anyone who doesn't cook..... I have a wonderful sil who hates cooking intensely and certainly doesn't to it on a daily basis and all her kids are fine. She herself is a picky eater and just doesn't enjoy food the same way I do. There are other ways to be a great mom and wife. I'm just describing how it is for me.

I'm an okay, if somewhat lazy, cook. My husband does the vast majority of the cooking since he's really good at it!

Simple food can be very tasty but you need good and fresh ingredients in order to make it good.

I am pretty good at cooking but my husband is so picky and hardly wants to eat my food!! That prompts me to try to get better and make specific things that he likes. (I know it’s just him, because everybody else eats a lot of my food and I get compliments!) my dh loves to eat out and likes gourmet food.

Now I realized a lot of it is because he eats with his eyes. As long as I make something look a little prettier, he eats more of it! So now I’m working on improving plating lol.

My kids eat my food. They are simple easy dinners that are nutritious and yummy.

What do you consider gourmet food?

No I have zero patience for something that gets consumed in huge quantities in record speed time.
I'm told my food is good but I don't believe it. I don't think it's anything special. I don't like the food I cook.
When we first got married my husband asked me not to cook anything that takes faster to eat than to cook. Lol.
I also hate washing pots so anything that cooks in a disposable pan in the oven is my kind of thing. The quicker the better. Thank Gd for my air fry setting on my oven.

I forget stuff alot so I'll leave things in the oven or forget an ingredient. Unsure how I can try to be better ofc someone will tell me timers, you think if I forget it's in the oven I'll remember to put on a timer? And how do I put on a timer for an ingredient? But BH my food comes out good. My sister says Hashem is with me in my kitchen cuz if another person would cook how I cook, it wouldn't work out but BH everyone I know likes my food

Tasty food is all about the seasoning imo. And if you got it you got it.
