Hi.
I'm an art teacher who has worked with kids and adults for many years.
Every now and then people ask if I am an art therapist.
I'm wondering if this is something I should or could pursue.
If you are an art therapist or have looked into it, can you describe the process?
How long does it take to get certified?
Does one have to have any background in mental health?
Does it pay nicely?
Any info is appreciated.

It’s a specialty program you do after your masters in a mental health field. It’s a modality to add on to basic therapy. You get paid the same as a therapist would, either in a clinic (less) or private (more).

You can work in a Children’s hospital. No idea what they pay . But I know there’s only 2 or 3 for the entire hospital so jobs may be be hard to find

Ok thanks for your responses.
I'm thinking that's it probably not a good fit for me. I'm not that interested in mental health. I like art, drawing and teaching art. People always ask me if I do art therapy because they see great benefits when their kids take lessons by me.
So I occasionally think about it.
But it's seems like art therapy is about helping the patient express their emotions through art which is not something I think I'm interested in..

I was in art classes for most of my childhood it was the only safe space for me. Don't underestimate the power of being a regular art teacher. Keep on doing what you do and know you might be the one safe space for someone.
P.s. I'm an art teacher now as well

For children being creative and finding something they are good at gives children confidence that's why people are seeing results with their kids in your groups.
The official art therapy is under mental health and they use art to get through to the children and help with trauma etc

Same for me. My once a week art class (in school) was my only happy place in an abused and bullied childhood. Art teachers have a very special place in my heart.
