There are a lot of fake/counterfeit USB drives on the market right now. When you plug them into your computer, there appears to be the amount of storage advertised on the label, but in reality, the firmware of the drive was modified to say it has more storage than it does, and when you try to write to it, you lose your data.
To confirm that your USB drive is legit, use Validrive.
(If you bought it from a marketplace and it's fake, report the seller.)
