Why? I’ve replied to a few old threads. It’s something I was searching about and had a question or two to the mothers that posted on it.
Is that not allowed?

Sometimes it's irrelevant like a response to a question when it's not needed anymore
Sometimes it's a long thread which initially I think is current, only to waste time reading it and realizing it was already resolved
Sometimes it causes people to respond after only reading a few posts and that keeps bumping it so this cycle is perpetuated... Only for people to move later that the issue what resolved in the middle of the thread because so much was added on...
Why make people read old irrelevant threads? If they want to they can search words on that topic, I do it sometimes and it's very helpful - but that doesn't mean that hundreds of people need to read it along with me and that I should clutter everyone's home page

Just some of the reasons.
Why would you want people to bump old threads? What's the benefit to this site and to the women on it?

Not everything on this site has to benefit you.

Sometimes a poster will bump up an old thread because it's relevant to them right now and they want to revive the conversation.

I agree that it's annoying, but if it benefits another poster, there's not much you can do about it.

I think there might be something in the site rules about bumping old threads. Perhaps I’m mistaken?

This is from the imamother new user guide:

“ Another common newcomer mistake is bumping up an old thread. Before replying to a thread it would be wise to check the date on the original post (OP). It is usually unhelpful to post on a very old thread. We assume that the original poster (OP) has already figured out what to do by now. Occasionally, answering an old post with new information, or asking the OP what happened in the end, is helpful. Please use your discretion to decide.”

I love how in the manners and etiquette section you are writing in caps lock which is extremely rude

My own personal opinion is that bumping old threads is annoying.

I’m not endorsing bumping threads.
That said, I always check dates when threads were started when reading and if I see it’s a long but old thread- I skip to the end to see why it was bumped. If it’s a subject I’m interested in, I’ll read it, and if not I won’t. Regardless of date, I’m choosing to waste my time when and on which thread I prefer.

Especially in long threads, I try not to respond before reading through the threads. Usually the point I want to add was already said. If not, and it’s a current thread- I’ll post reply then.

Mod here. It's not against the rules of the site but as a mod, when I see an old thread bumped up, I lock it. It's considered bad forum etiquette (netiquette) to bump up old threads. And remember this - on a site like imamother, people come and go very often and are not even around to reply if someone quotes them. It's awkward.

- If you want to revive a conversation, start a new thread to have a new conversation on the same topic.

- If you want to know how someone is doing and want to bump it up for an update - that's understandable as we are all human and we all get curious. But don't. An OP will or will not come back with an update if she wants to. Often, an OP is happy her thread got buried and people forgot about it. No OP owes anyone an update.

- Some members are well known from many years ago and are no longer with us, it's shocking to see their names knowing they've passed away. Others have simply left and want to be forgotten and left alone.

Just don't bump up old threads.
