For mesivta. Typical five towns/ Brooklyn schools. Darchei, YFR, May, Netzach etc.
Are they expected to be perfect? Just about perfect? Or there is lots of room for expected errors ?
The whole gemara plus rashi and tosfos is so much learning!

No one expects an eighth grade boy to be perfect. He should do his best, that's all.

The 8th grade rebbeim usually make sure the boys are prepared. My son prepared 2 blatt that he learned in school that year, so he knew it cold. And even so, one school asked a question he didn’t know (I think to gauge his reaction). My son just said ‘I don’t know’, and the rebbe told him he didn’t expect him to know it, as it’s generally not taught in 8th grade, but would my son like for the rebbe to teach him the answer? And they did. My son loved it. Got a feel for the rebbes teaching style
