I'm renting my neighbor's apartment for my father who's coming to visit us in Israel. We agreed on a certain amount per night, and I told her it would be 6 nights.
I realized that although the trip is 6 days, my father will only be staying there for 5 nights (days). I messaged her to tell her, and she replies "Well, we were counting on that for our rent so I dunno what to tell you..."
When I reserved the apartment she told me she had gotten other inquiries but no one else sent a deposit, so it's pretty obvious that no one else was going to take the apartment for those dates.
I don't think I owe her that money but what should I tell her? I don't want to be on bad terms with my neighbor...
(Also my father is the one paying, I did not tell him what she replied yet but I doubt he will want to pay for an extra night.)

How do you know she didn't lose that night because she promised it to you? It's your error.

This is a classic halachic shailah, I’m not sure of the answer. I personally would just pay for the whole six nights either way, to keep shalom.

It was your mistake and you committed to a certain amount of days. Saying you want less days because you messed up doesn’t mean she has to relieve you of your commitment, and you are obligated to pay her unless she says otherwise
And I will add that just because no one else had given a deposit yet does NOT mean no one would have taken it. I’m not sure why that’s your thought process

You need to ask a Shayla. Very possible you owe her the full amount and she wouldn’t have given it to you and tried harder to find someone for longer . Do you want her backing out on you now?

Is there another place your father can stay if this place falls through? How desperate are you for this apartment? I’d personally ask a rav what to do. I wouldn’t either want to pay the extra night (depending how much it is) but it’s a tricky situation.

Agree, although I’ll add that sometimes we have to do things we don’t want. Especially if the mistake is our own, and we need to be accountable

If I were in your shoes I would definitely pay the full amount. It was your mistake.

How long after booking did you tell her you need it for less time?
I dont think her using the money to pay her rent has any relevance, if you owe her the money she can be using it however she wants...

Your mistake so you have to pay. It would be kind of her to waive it but she doesn't have to.
