We are in the process of evicting our tenants since we need the space. We're not allowed to accept rent for months already (since the eviction proceedings started)..
Once they're evicted, will we end up getting paid for all these months they're living here rent-free?

I highly doubt you get anything once the eviction process starts. The court ends up forcing them out but that’s it.

Oh, wow. So why wouldn't someone choose to be evicted? They get at least a year of free rent. Do future landlords see that they were previously evicted?

Yes, it will come up on any future background checks and make it very difficult to rent or buy

Renting property is not the easy free money people seem to think it is.
They may even cause damages and there is little you can effectively do.
I imagine you still need to pay property tax on the property.

They don’t have to pay technically
if you have a judgement against them you can sue them post eviction.
I sue my tenants and get a cut of their check weekly or monthly.
If they don’t officially work it’s harder to go after them but possible if you have a good lawyer.

Of course not, and you won’t get your thousands in legal fees back either.
NYC hates landlords.

This. My parents fought tenants (of my grandparents house after they passed) for years and years in court. Thousands and thousands of dollars were spent . They certainly never got paid. It was a total nightmare

We evicted 3 tenants. 2 before we moved 1 after. The 2 before we didn't. The one after we made a deal that they have a yr to move. Part of the deal was that they have to pay whatever they owe including the months they didn't pay while the proceedings were ongoing.

The laws in NY are extremely against landlords. We almost have no shot.

Good question but an eviction does go on the record. One of our tenants begged it should be off the record (there's a way I'm not sure how). We gave them a choice to be off the record but pay up what they owe. They refused so it stayed. At least we have that tiny revenge of being on the record.
