If your 12 year old ds loves music and would really want to have a good band at his bar mitzvah, and would love to have dancing with his friends and rabbeim, but his bar mitzvah is during Sefira, what would you do? It is after Lag Ba'Omer, if that matters, but we keep the second half of Sefira.

You can change to the first half for just this year.

My family and dh's all hold the second half, and some relatives may be upset if we switch.

Lag Ba'Omer is on Friday this year.

We could maybe do the party after Shavuos.

None of our relatives live in our neighborhood. I would love to make it over a Shabbos, so there's no music anyway. We would have all our immediate relatives come. We have a lot of siblings, but I should be able to find enough guest rooms for them all without a problem. Ds's friends could also come and we can all eat together in our shul.

The other option would be to invite everyone for a weekday event after sefira and have just a kiddush Shabbos for his friends and our parents and no siblings. I can't choose some siblings and leave out others, but I can't afford to host so many people for Shabbos and also make a bo bayom.

The only problem with doing it Shabbos is the music and dancing.

Unless we make something small in our backyard- maybe a barbecue- for his class after sefira. And we could have a band there.

If lag baomer is on Friday, you can have the party Thursday night.
