My son’s first night in yeshiva is tonight and he’s already homesick (even though he always said he’d never be!) I can’t relax knowing he’s feeling this way. What can I say to him to make him feel better??

What helps me when I'm feeling strong emotions is telling myself "you won't always feel this way. Right now it's so hard, but it's temporary."

Tell him it's normal to feel that way.
It will get better

I’m going through the same thing although my son hasn’t actually said that he’s homesick. He’s in a new yeshiva in another country and he doesn’t like it (yet).
I just keep saying tehillim and asking Hashem to help him feel good, have menuchas hanefesh, make good friends and have a good kesher with the rebbeim. Only Hashem can take over at this point. I know that he’s safe and has what he needs and I know that all beginnings are hard. This hard beginning will pass.

Tell him he is very normal to feel like this, most people do. You miss him too. He is going to have an awesome year in yeshiva. He got this. You will see him soon. He can call you 45 times a day if he wants to. But every time he calls you will ask him tell me one thing you are enjoying at yeshiva too.

That you miss him too. That he is strong and capable.

Thanks all, this was helpful! It definitely gets better I just don’t remember what, if anything, helped me when I was in sem! Hopefully I’ll sleep tonight too!
