My child is in sleepaway camp for the first time. They get to call 2x over the month.
Someone suggested that I email the counselors with my contact info and encourage them to call me if anything comes up or my kids need anything. She said they probably won't respond or reach out, but it does put on their radar that there is someone behind this child who cares and that effects how they care for the child.
My husband seems to feel it's a nerdy and unnecessary idea, camp has our contact info and will contact us if need be. Otherwise just let things be..
Curious what experienced camp parents think/do.

They can call 2 times in 4 weeks? What type of camp is this? I don’t think you should contact anyone. Your child is not the only child and parents are contacted if there are any real issues. I think it will just be an annoyance. But I need clarity because I don’t understand what you mean by 2 times.

How do you have the counselors contact info?
In most camps, the counselors are high schoolers with limited phone time.
If you need to reach out, reach out to the admin / "camp mother" or whichever adult is overseeing the campers.

Exactly. Once every 2 weeks. Camp is 4 weeks.
I wouldn't be nudging repeatedly. More like a one off email just saying if you need anything we are here.

There is a form on the website to contact whichever staff.

How do you have contact info for counselors? If camp has this rule of such limited contact they are not going to be fans of you reaching out. Send your child letters and encourage her to write back.

That's the other thing I was wondering! Are letters still a thing? I taught my child how to address an envelope and sent a few stamps, and told them they can write if they want. I remembered being annoyed about writting as a kid, and worried it may be embarrassing..

Yes it’s still a way kids communicate with parents in camp
